I was really disappointed with this. Great style, great PQ - but I have a real problem with stupidity.
[Show spoiler]Only a moron goes thru all of that, sees his buddy die, loses the girl and leaves the f*ckin' money!?! No way I'm not packin' heat for that last meet & no way I'm leavin' the money.

And what was with that first job which opened the movie?
[Show spoiler]He just got out and left his two passengers there to get busted? I don't think he'd stay in business for long pullin' that kinda crap.
Really pretty and some really great performances - but empty in the end.

As he stated in the very beginning he was a driver, that its. His job was to get them to where they where they were going.

That money that got his only friend killed for, and put Irene and her kids life in danger. Why would he want that?

I don't have a copy of the work print, I watched it on my phone, on one of those shady websites where you can watch any new movie for free.

Well, first, he's gonna be on the run and that takes money. Second, if Irene & kid are in danger, they're still in danger - and could use money or protection.
[Show spoiler]Perhaps killing Nino/Bernie obviated that danger - just two of, what, five or six people he killed? Pretty high body count for "just a driver". With everyone dead, who could tie him to the job? And he lost both his day job and his movie career (leaving LA) = needs money - the money that was left in a restaurant parking lot. No-one would pick that up? He's certain it's going to get left there for the cops (hopefully, honest cops)? And, of course, they would give it back to the mob who would be satisfied? And I didn't mention this, but wasn't his jacket covered in blood during the last few scenes - and no-one said a word, even when he met Bernie at the restaurant? No, not in this world.

I don't usually complain about plot holes or whatever, but ... this was only possible in La La Land where no-one knows what being poor is all about - much less being poor and on the run. Hey, there was so much that was good about this movie that I'd like to keep it - despite the long time (half the movie?) when nothing happens - but the end they chose just killed it for me.

I never got the impression that he left them to get busted. He pulled in the garage to get away from the cops at the same time the game was getting over, giving them cover to get away into the crowd.

He probably died soon after at the wheel of his car, swirving into a pregnant bear, taking it to hell with him. Plot twist = Gosling slips into an alternate universe where he's Nicholas Cage and Drive Angry is the sequel. First he was driving subtle, now he's driving angry. In his car.

I think Drive needs to just be left as it is lol

The end of the game was synced with his 5 minutes. He says once those 5 minutes are over, he's out. I think parking in that crowd was a great way for them to evade from the police. There's no evidence that they got busted.

Why do people just assume things about movies that never happen on screen?

I'm treating THE DRIVER('78) as a sequel. I just ordered it from Twilight and when it get's here I'm having a double feature night.
[Show spoiler]Gosling/O'Neil are basically the same person, only O'Neil is tougher through out THE DRIVER , where Gosling get's softer after he falls for Irene. It's fun to think O'Neil is the way he is now because of what happened with Irene in the "first" movie. Also O'Neil doesn't have another job, he only drives and lives in a shitty little motel type room, almost like he's staying under the radar from the events of the "first" movie.
This is the stuff I think about at night.

I like to think of the BMW Films: The Hire starring Clive Owens as his further adventures.

My confusion (and I only saw it once) was based on this : he got right out without a word and split. The guys (perhaps) looked surprised? They definitely had a choice, but they probably couldn't split with the money. Those big black bags would be very suspicious to the swarming cops and most guys are very reluctant to just give up their score.

No-one "assumed" anything, friend. Folks were discussing a movie - which is what the thread is here for, right? My comment was a question (note the ?). Questions are not assumptions. 540Blue said he never got that "impression". Again, no assumptions. Perhaps you might read a bit closer next time - especially before hurting yourself with all that head-banging.

I may have misunderstood that "5 minute" thing (again, I only watched it once). I took it to mean that he would only wait 5 minutes for them to get out from the score and into the car. I'm pretty sure their hiding and dodging the cops would have taken more than 5 minutes, but I'm not willing to go back and stopwatch it (well, okay, 6:20 from pulling up to abandoning the car). Basically, you hire a getaway driver to get you away - safely - not to pull over to the curb at the 5 minute mark and kick you out of the car. That's absurd on the face of it, who would pay for that? If that is what he meant, next time I need a driver, I'll hire Frank (The Transporter) or the Cowboy (The Driver) - they didn't dump their passengers out, they got them away to safety.

Somewhat off topic but I've seen people here have had the jacket Gosling wears in the film and was wondering where it can be purchased? I'd like to be Driver for Halloween.

Not sure if you can get it before Halloween, but this is the official retailer.

Oh wow, it's on backorder for 3 weeks. Indeed it might not arrive by then . Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I do see some on eBay but they're probably cheap imitation ones as most cost quite a bit less. Of course if it was a good imitation I wouldn't really mind.

Good lord, that's ingenious. Insane, but ingenious.

That is what I am going for Halloween. You can get the jacket off of ebay for around $80 and it actually looks really good. You can also get the gloves from ebay as well. The nice hand maid leather ones are a little expensive (over $40) but really nice and worth it. I bought the stuff a few months ago.
