Our office answer for anything we don't know is "seven". Its an inside thing.

He knows I'm a member here in these forums, and he happens to LOVE the movie 'Drive'.

He said if I could get "seven" members to talk about something other than "Drive" in a 24 hour period in the "Drive" thread, I could have his copy of Drive.

We just counted and I got EIGHT people to talk about something other than Drive: RJ Smoove, El_Jay, Balthazar Bee, FreakyFraser, Iherman22, Icedburden, Cinemach, and Bam777.

You guys rock!

Of course Clooney is a good actor, you weirdo's. I just mentioned the FROM DUSK TIL DAWN thing because he really did need 20 takes to do one line, and I needed to pull from something that was true to get my free copy of Drive.

Glad I could help. I'm very easy to get off topic.

No comments on the Oscar snub? No noms in any notable category.

^ That's how they do...

How does that "Extremely Mediocre and Incredibly Oscar Bait-y" get a nom for BEST PICTURE when it feels like promotion for it only started about 2 weeks ago? Yeah, there are festivals and such where films like this get screened and raved about well before awards season but I'd literally NEVER heard about it until about 2-3 weeks ago (and w/ the number of film blogs and publications that I read, that seems weird).

Not sure I understand your argument. Just because you have not heard about it, does not mean it is not worthy of being nominated. It seems pretty harsh to label a film like that, in which you have not even seen.

I must say though, I do have a feeling I will be disappointed with this nomination, but I am waiting to reserve judgement at least until after I have seen it.

It's an Extremely Awful and Incredibly Stupid film. Did - did ya see what I did there? I did like a thing..
Any who, I'm more upset that Albert Brooks didn't get a nomination. That is just so disappointing on all fronts.

Yeah, that smarts. I was ready to accept defeat until I saw that title among the nominees. Just when you thought they couldn't sink any lower on the credibility scale.

And The War Horse? The trailer was so sickly sweet I became nauseous. I'm normally in Spielberg's corner, but man -- it certainly looks like he's beginning to embody his own worst cliché. I may not even bother with it on video.

HOWEVER, on a brighter note, I just popped out to the local blu-ray merchant to pick up Woody x 2 and Hitch x 3 and...what's this?!

It would seem at least one retailer here in Ontario has Drive on the shelf a week early. It's bought and paid for now, so if they want it back, they'd better come a-knockin' in full SWAT gear.

Aaaahhhhhhhh...I can feel your jealousy.

I believe that depends on whom you ask. Being someone whom has a degree in not only Recording Tech, but also in Sound Editing and Mixing for Film and TV, I would consider being nominated a very notable honor, as I am sure Bender and Ennis do for 'Drive.' I'm pretty sure being nominated for any Oscar would be a notable achievement for just about anyone.

Not that I don't think I would agree with you in the end, but you haven't even seen 'War Horse' or 'Extremely Loud....'

Not sure I understand how you can convincingly suggest they don't belong in the nominations, when you haven't even seen them.

I am jealous about you getting Drive early though.

++++++++++1
This nomination is an abomination. Albert Brooks's snub disappointment me the most.

They obviously can't please everyone, but it seems like every year there is the glaring snub and horrific nomination.

That's fair enough. In the past, a BP nomination would be a no-brainer for me, but ever since they've expanded the category to include more than five, it seems like some dubious (more dubious than usual) choices have begun to creep in. The Blind Side anyone?

The trailers for both films looked rather...maudlin? Is that the word?

ELAIC hasn't even been garnering particularly good reviews -- 46% average on metacritic, to Drive's 79%. And the trailer's brazen use of the most overused U2 song in history to evoke swelling emotions as we imagine what it must be like to lose Tom Hanks...

Pass. I'll stay home and chop onions instead.

I'll probably give in on The War Horse eventually, but I'd love to see Spielberg make another Munich. By the way, amid the ado about Jaws, where's that blu-ray?

Metacritic is shite. Look at RottenTomatoes: ELAIC received 48% and Drive 93% from critics (67% and 79% from viewers, respectively). There is nothing to justify ELAIC's nomination.

It's not so much that I haven't seen or heard about it as it is the fact that nobody is talking about it. Mainstream film outlets weren't talking about "Drive," but it was all over the 'net. Film sites dedicated to more than just mainstream fare talk about a ton of films that most people have never seen and somehow this film and "The Iron Lady" are never mentioned on a list of "Festival Darlings," or films that could make a splash come awards season.

Nobody was talking about either of those two as far as I can tell and yet...Golden Globes time rolls around and these films are suddenly candidates for best of the year.

They could be great, but you wouldn't know it from the coverage they're getting from any outlet.

I definitely agree, but to be fair... had you originally saw the trailer for 'Drive', you might have passed on watching that as well. The trailer was really advertising a completely different movie than it is, as has been made fairly apparent by many whom agree.

I would agree though, Maudlin would definitely describe how I felt as well regarding the trailer. Pulling on people's heart strings doesn't make any movie a good one, but it can happen. I digress...I try not to judge too much prior to seeing any film, and I haven't seen ELAIC.

I would definitely love to see Spielberg return to the 'Munich' form. I don't know where that Blu-ray is, but I would sure love to see that released this year.

I do agree that some things are just a "shoo-in" for Oscars, total Oscar bait. "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" isn't even doing well critically. Generally it's critically-acclaimed films that get nommed for Oscars, not films with a 47% "Rotten" rating on RT where pretty much all the complaints leveled at it say that it's pure Oscar bait, emotionally manipulative "9/11 Porn". It's almost like a big back-patting favor for Tom Hanks because he's been out of the awards talk for a while.

"Warrior" did better critically than both that and "War Horse", but hey, it's Spielberg, let's bring him on down. Meryl Streep playing Margaret Thatcher? Like that's not guaranteed to get a nom, even if it sucks.

There are certain things the Oscars just snatch up, seemingly regardless of true quality, so the gentleman does have a point, even if he hasn't seen them yet.

This is a good point as well, El_Jay.

I guess, in the end, my expectations for Drive being nominated were extremely low, despite RT ratings, etc. I guess the bonus is, at least it got nominated for Sound Editing. Hey, at least we know someone at the Academy actually saw the film, or at least listened to it.

Too me, War Horse was an Oscar bate film that I was kind of expecting to a degree (throwing Spielberg a bone), but ELAIC was eviscerated by critics, and I was honestly shocked by its nomination. I haven't seen The Iron Lady, but it's such a predictable nom. Streep could be great in it, but I would much rather see some fresh faces get nom'd. Hello Academy? How about Olsen? At 17 noms, they might as well just write Streep's nom for next year now.

I just secured my ticket for the Alamo/Mondo screening where they're giving away an exclusive Mondo print to all ticketholders. First 15 people in line get a copy of the Blu-ray too, but I've got to work that day so I doubt I'll be early enough to get that. Can't wait to see what the print looks like, and to see the film one last time on the big screen in 4K.

I had a feeling that Drive wouldn't get very much attention by the Academy. It irritates me that we almost hear about the same people winning these Oscars. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo should have been up for Best Director. Drive should have had more nominations. I personally even think that Michael Fassbender should have had an Oscar nomination for Shame. The reason Shame wasn't nominated for anything is because it's controversial and is about a sex addict (and is NC-17) which the Academy would never give appreciation to.

I stopped really caring about the Academy's choices. I find that multiple people get snubbed each and every year. There isn't a doubt that Streep will win Best Actress. While she's incredible, it would be great to allow somebody else to take him the gold every once in a while. I guess we'll have to just wait and see what happens, but oh well.

Despite the fact that Drive didn't get much love at all from the Academy, it is one of the best film os the year in my mind and deserves the Oscar gold more than some of the movies that are nominated. (The Descendents, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and The Tree of Life) I personally didn't like any of those three. The Tree of Life was very well-made (which I can appreciate) but it doesn't deserve Best Picture.

Only movie I haven't seen that is being nominated for best picture is War Horse. I could tell it would get a lot of nominations just from the trailer since, as it was stated above, the Academy simply eats up that stuff.
