Disappointing! Mostly small, uninspired films it seems. No, I haven't seen most of them, in fact I've only seen "Tree of Life" (which I think should be on the list) and would like to see "War Horse". The others haven't looked that interesting or look gimmicky and contrived (Meryl Streep, playing Margaret Thatcher, really...) so no, I'm not claiming any great authority here.

What I am doing is lamenting the days when, with five BP nominations, all were top-notch films, all were critically-acclaimed, most theatre-goers had seen and loved them, and there was high drama during the awards because everyone had a dog in the fight. Now, generally, who cares...The industry will swoon over it's appointed ones, Streep will simper, and once more the viewing audience will post fewer numbers.

To make my point, consider a sampling of past BP nominations...

1956: Around the World in 80 Days, Friendly Persuasion, Giant, The King and I, The Ten Commandments.

1962: Lawrence of Arabia, The Longest Day, The Music Man, Mutiny on the Bounty, To Kill a Mockingbird.

1998: Elizabeth, Life is Beautiful, Saving Private Ryan, Shakespeare in Love, and The Thin Red Line.

Where are the unforgettable classics in the current list?

The more I look over the nominations, the more I shake my head with disappointment.

BP: I'd toss War Horse (mediocre Oscar bate and nom'd on Speilberg's name), and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (whose nom is atrocious). The Help and Moneyball I could take them or leave them; decent films but I think far better and more daring choices were overlooked.

Toss Demian Bichir or Brad Pitt right on their asses, and add the snubbed Michael Fassbender for Shame. Good or not, Streep has had enough nomination for awhile; I'm bored with seeing her. Get some fresh faces in there. Jonah Hill can get drop kicked straight out the door, and nom Albert Brooks. They could have atleast thrown Drive a Best Cinematography bone—toss War Horse out of there. What about Drive's incredible score/soundtrack?

Oh well...just my ranting opinions.

Drive's soundtrack wasn't even eligible to begin with, I'm afraid.

I'm pretty sure being nominated for any Oscar would be a notable achievement for just about anyone.
You're correct: every nomination is notable.

I'm not surprised Drive did not receive a Picture nom, or even a Director one, even though it deserved both. The big snub as everyone knows is the Supporting Actor for Albert Brooks - probably the biggest snub of the entire nomination proceedings
[Show spoiler]and just slightly ahead of the fact that this didn't receive a Cinematography nod, either (off the top of my head, quickly, this was the best-shot film of the year). An Editing nomination would've been deserved as well
.

There wasn't a huge awards campaign for this picture like the other big ones, though, and that can really make a difference. And we all know that this picture was just marketed terribly here, we've discussed that thoroughly.

But whatever. HMV just sent me an email this morning stating "it's on its way", so all's right in the world.

I am seriously thinking about getting that. $160 is steep for a jacket...but that's a damn fine-looking jacket.

Our office answer for anything we don't know is "seven". Its an inside thing.

He knows I'm a member here in these forums, and he happens to LOVE the movie 'Drive'.

He said if I could get "seven" members to talk about something other than "Drive" in a 24 hour period in the "Drive" thread, I could have his copy of Drive.

We just counted and I got EIGHT people to talk about something other than Drive: RJ Smoove, El_Jay, Balthazar Bee, FreakyFraser, Iherman22, Icedburden, Cinemach, and Bam777.

You guys rock!

Of course Clooney is a good actor, you weirdo's. I just mentioned the FROM DUSK TIL DAWN thing because he really did need 20 takes to do one line, and I needed to pull from something that was true to get my free copy of Drive.
Congrats on the score. And, ahem, you're welcome.

Hahaa-- I'd agree - It was killing me to hold off and not comment.
That said, I had a rough first half of the week when my BASIC INSTINCT and AMERICAN PSYCHO (both 2007 Lionsgate titles) stopped playing.

At first I thought it was my player. I called Sony Support. Made sure I was off BD Live (I was). Made sure I had latest firware (I did). They had me hold STOP and PLAY buttons simultaneously for ten seconds to do a factory re-set. Then when that didnt work, wanted me to send my machine in (BDPS-570) for repairs. I was stressed!

Good thing I looked in the forums here. Turns out many old Lionsgate titles just stop playing. I just re-bought American Psycho and the new one plays fine. I tried every other Lionsgate title I had. They all worked sans for AMER PSYCHO and BASIC INSTINCT.

I needed some good news, and DRIVE was it!

Nope, just a big homage to 80's film.

Surprised by all the War Horse hate. I thought it was fantastic, and I had very little desire to see it.

I much prefer Metacritic.
It just seems like every time there's a movie about horses, it gets shoved up everyone's a s s to like it and gets instant critical acclaim. It's just force-fed and a tired/boring subject matter, in my opinion. In fact, anything that has to do about horses, always seems to get forced acclaim. When ESPN did a 50 greatest athletes of all-time about a decade ago, they ranked a horse ahead over many hall of fame human beings!

I still don't think either are good enough to replace Fassbender.

I prefer metacritic too because at least metacritic filters out the "everybody and their mama" wannabe critics that rotten tomatoes includes. Metacritic only includes established and respected critics from established publications. Fassbender should've been nominated too but not at the expense of Bichir, who I thought had the more resonant role and gave the more resonant performance but to each their own.

Weird... was at Queen Video in Toronto and they had one copy of the bluray and about ten of the DVD in stock for rent. I even asked the girl at the desk and I think I came off like a huge narc asking if Drive was supposed to be out already.
