+1. Thats how I saw it too. It had a very film-noir feel to it, much like Blade Runner.

The first 20 minutes are great, but then it pans out to such a nondescript movie with unneccessary violence (way over the top) and almost copycat style (tell me the director hasn't seen his share of Lynch movies along with Raimi-also the overhead shots of the city is for certain inspired by Mann's Collateral).Wasn't overly-impressed with Gosling either.Almost embarresing looking at him waiting 10 seconds before giving a singleword reply, but the fault may lie with the director...

But the first 20 minutes almost makes me consider buying it for that alone.Reminds me of the Shining-no other similarities but for the extremely good opening.

The same with the Resident Evil box by itself (U.S. Release).
Same here. I'd be interested in the canadian slip..but I can't buy another full copy.

Ryan Gosling is a blessing and a curse: He is fantastic in the role, but he probably brings in a lot of people that are completely unprepared for the type of film this really is.

I think the first 20 minutes felt like a Michael Mann film, after that it takes on a different direction, more towards English gangster films. With a film-noir overtone. Gosling I believe did a fantastic job, but I also thought his character was great. So much mystery surrounding him, much like Deckard in Blade Runner (and for the record I don't think he was a replicant ).

Hmmm, so we got some comparing the intro to a Michael Mann film and others comparing it to Kubrick's The Shining...

This has to be a pretty cool movie with comparisons as such

The movie bares a big resemblance to the great Mann film, Thief. A film I hope makes it to BD in the future.

If thats the case Im all in.

Thief is incredible pre-Miami Vice Mann. Great Neo-Noir.

And yes this needs the BD treatment. I still have the VHS.

Back on topic.....

No, if you had a problem with it, have a problem with James Sallis; the author of the book this is based on. Nicholas Winding Refn did a great job translating the book to screen, with some minor changes as far as I hear-- I have the book, just haven't gotten around to read it yet, but it being like 180 pages and big font, I could knock it out over a weekend if I take many breaks which I plan to soon.

Nope. The DVD isn't either, so for those, like me, who cut down DVD-sized slips of Blu-rays that were jipped from one, you may have to wait for the rumored special edition later this year.

Oh, snap! Thanks for the info. If anyone in Canada acquires just the slip and is looking to sell it for a reasonable price, PM me and I'll pay a cost for slip alone and the shipping.

Grabbed from the slipcover thread from Google Image search. Again, if anyone from Canada can acquire this slip and mini-magazine only... Hell, if it's not much more, the whole package, PM me the price for reimbursement and shipping and I'll be very interested.

Between repeated claims from Refn/Gosling that the original conception of the screenplay was much more of a generic "high octane" heist thriller set to be big budget/star Hugh Jackman/etc and that they "removed 99% of the dialogue", I got the impression the changes from the book are actually pretty significant. I plan to give it a read sometime soon.

Figured I'd wait a few days and instead of buying the U.S. release, I pre-ordered the Canadian blu-ray. The US artwork is that bad IMO. This one will look nice next to the steelbook.
