The character depth to me is secondary to the overall feel of this move.
Its not meant to be an overacted, dialogue at all times movie.
Theres a minimalistic approach that lets the viewer to read between the lines.
You can achieve the overgoal without talkin alot.
Im not some Oscar supporter but this year there is a highly regarded flick thats a silent film. Is that terrrible acting because they dont forcefeed the audience with psycho babble?

Ive stated before. Its a very very good movie. There is nothing wrong if style outweights substance.

Manns Miami Vice didnt raise the bar for tv acting but the style of the tv show made many folks realilize the options of tv directing. Post MTV generation merged music with image. Mann already was doin it with THief.

Drive to me falls in line with that lineage. I dont need to sympathize with Driver to enjoy the overall style of the movie.

Cool story bro. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

has the director given any background info about Driver? I'm curious if he had a bad past or was into some bad stuff. Obviously he was but I guess I would like little idea. I don't want specifics since the mystery is the compelling part but a little info would sate my curiosity.

I already posted my dislike of the film, but to be fair, the thread title doesn't saw "Drive - Only people who liked the film can post" ... everyone is entitled to voice their opinion, it's not their fault if some people can't take it.

I thought is was obvious, guess I'm wrong. (At least El Jay got it)

Man, some people around here have a guilty conscience.

I don't know if this has been mentioned or not -- but know what I hate the most about the US cover?

The Driver's jacket doesn't have a scorpion on the front. C'mon! Makes me want to drop $20 just for the futureshop cover.

Hasn't Gosling said that Drive is his super hero movie? And that The Driver is somebody who probably has played too many video games and can't distinguish reality from fantasy?

If you think Gosling is a shitty actor, I suggest checking out Blue Valentine.

I watched Drive for the second time today and so far think it's the best movie I've seen from 2011. We'll see if I feel the same way after all the March releases, but I'm sure it will remain pretty high up on the list.

I've heard the "superhero" analogy before. Refn said that this along with Bronson and Valhalla Rising, are part of a trilogy that sort of explores myth.
There's Bronson becoming infamous criminal. Valhalla Rising deals with the origins of Christianity and its effect on humanity. And The Driver becomes a "real hero".

I personally loved the film. Refn has been on my radar for a long time... Since Pusher actually, another fine film. I'm excited to see his next endeavor which re-unites him with Gosling called Only God Forgives.

Oh it is, but it was just because your post was right after mine.

I love the black and white in this thread:

"There's NO substance!"

"It's ALL substance!"

I don't think driving in a sanctioned race and driving for illegal robberies are the same kind of thrill. I think breaking the law and eluding police is a big part of the thrill, racing for money on a track would not have provided that.

Also I'm sure he told that guy in the diner to STFU because he wants to maintain his anonymity and keep a barrier between his every day life and his wheelman life, not because he regrets what he did. There was nothing to indicate he had some great change of heart regarding the wheelman jobs. It's just poor etiquette to go up and discuss illegal activities in public. The guy should not have let on that he recognized him at all.

If you need someone to point out what was technically brilliant in this movie, meaning the cinematography, direction, editing, sound design, the technical portions, then you aren't as big a cinephile as you seem to think. Even if you hate the story and characters there is no denying how well made the movie is from a technical standpoint, as I stated before. Well, I guess you can deny it, obviously, but it just makes you look like an armchair movie director who has no idea what he's talking about.

Yeah, and for the guy who says that Driver went from nice guy to cold-blooded killer in a flash, this very exchange was the first time that we get a hint at Driver's less than savory past, and, more importantly, not so nice demeanor. It's the moment where I said to myself "Oh shit...there's somethin' we don't yet know about this guy..."

Where the hell is all this animosity coming from? Its a god-damn movie. If you love it, great. If you hate it, fine. But why is everyone calling everyone else an idiot for however they felt toward it? Why should I be made to feel stupid if I felt something toward the material? I didn't obsess over it, but I felt a connection at the glue that held the film together; I call that substance. More so then 90% of the features from last year. I'm sorry if certain people didn't click with it, but I see no need in making the rest of us who loved it feel guilty for doing so.

So, is this for sure getting a special edition later this year?

If so, i'll probably wait on it. Even though I REALLY want to get this...

The director said he intends to put out a "queen" edition, but no details yet. I know the feeling. Its a tough call, as I'd love to own it, but would certainly be patient if a suped up version is less than a year away.

I'd get it. If things shake out, I may be triple dipping on this one with a UK version that I can't even play on my PS3 (or can I? or can I play it on a PC Blu-ray player with certain software?). That case is teh sex though...

This is the first and only film that I'll do this for and I feel like it's entirely justified. If the Steady Clothing jacket were more screen accurate, I'd be getting that too (I still may).
