Thumbs up

Well, I finally watched Drive for the first time last night.

#1 Great movie and the best part of this movie was some of the ass kickings the Driver handed out. That last one in the elevator brought a tear to my eye, he gave that dood exactly what he deserved! That was sweet!I will watch it again in the next few days, I am pretty sure that this movie will only get better with repeat viewings.

Not my favorite film from last year (The Descendants and Rise of the Planet of the Apes are pretty muc tied for that spot), but I definitely agree that this film has gotten better with repeat viewings. I find Driver more, and more, alluring each time I watch it.

I felt like this at first, but I'm warming to UV. If you download Flixter to your desktop (I think it's called Flixter Collections), you can watch most of your UV copies without having an internet connection. I'm still not a fan, but having some of my DCs in HD is a plus. Tintin's in HD, as is TF3. I'm not sure if it's only with Paramount UV copies though. Irony is that Paramount releases both UV and iTunes DCs in their combo packs.

It seems a lot of people love violence just because it's up on the screen, whether there is justification or not. This movie would have made perfect sense without it and probably been even better. But i guess a movie about driving has to get the blood pumping with some gory violence as well.

That MUST be it.

The reason there was violence was he was protecting someone he cared about from awful, violent people. Some of us had needless violence, like myself, but I saw nothing wrong with the violence in Drive.

If that's the case, then the driver was no better than the awful, violent people he beat up.

That's the point. He was psychotic, antisocial, etc.

His heart did ALL of the 100% justified ass kickings. I'd not have enjoyed this movie nearly as much without this, in fact i'd have to say that these ass kickings from the heart are what make Drive such a good movie. After reading the last few posts in this thread I am gonna watch Drive again tonight. And frankly I am fairly excited even though this is my second viewing.

I'm not totally convinced Driver is human. At the beginning of the movie, there's a scene where Driver is driving [i know!] and there's a weird "wooshing" sound as he passes some traffic. This leads me to believe he's actually an Alien in an intergalactic space craft. Refn is a genius because the rest of the movie is very ambiguous to this fact. Driver doesn't talk much because he hasn't yet grasped all of our language yet, but It's no coincidence that he's fearless behind the wheel of a car. He travels the galaxy at beyond light speed. 100 mph is nothing to him.

He is violent because he is scared of us, there's no other explanation. Desperate to adapt to our primitive culture, Driver thinks that violence is a legitimate and acceptable way to solve problems.

Maybe if you subscribe to that philosophy that the guy who beats up a guy for beating up an elderly lady is no better than the guy beating up the elderly lady... but I think that's a crock of shit.

That's probably why we have police. So, there is satisfaction in seeing someone physically kill someone because it is the right thing to do?

It's because he's an alien. Deal with it bro.

I just wanted to mention that I threw in Crazy Stupid Love last night after Drive and I enjoyed it more the second time around. I am now a fan of Ryan Gosling and I look forward to seeing what he does in the future.

I think the funniest part is that a lot of folks didn't even know who he was even after The Notebook. It wasn't until the last year or two that most people actually put two and two together.
