by this logic than streaming HD content off of netflix isn't true HD and is no better than DVD. which is of course absolute nonsense.

Streaming content of course uses a lower bitrate than physical media. But if your'e talking about streaming content you're not comparing streaming to physical media, you're comparing it to other streaming.

Many people don't watch physical media anymore. So the comparison for them is HD on Netflix to 4K on Netflix. In which case 4K has a much higher bitrate and more resolution.

The netflix original series have been some of the best content in 4K to be released yet, and it looks undeniably better in 4K than in HD. Should I have waited until Netflix released those shows on UltraHD Blu-Ray to enjoy them?

Heck no. I want to enjoy them in the best quality possible when they're released, which right now, is streaming onto a 4K tv.

Eh, I don't stream. You have your own opinions, I won't argue with a fellow Michael Bay supporter!

I mean, I would chose physical media over streaming any day, but streaming has gotten very good. Especially with the new HEVC codec. The netflix series look incredible.

Yes! There where some shots in Jessica Jones on top of a building with skyscrapers and streets in the background. The quality was great. Never saw an image quality like that on Blu-ray.

Yes, there are other scenes where you can see that the compression has its problems. But at the moment there is no real alternative...

Here's something from the digital bits:

Finally today, many of you have been asking us recently when we can expect to see the very first 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray titles to be released in stores. Out best and latest intel from studio and retail sources suggests that you’ll likely see them really start to arrive in late February – either on 2/22 or 2/29

Late February for Ultra HD Blu-ray releases.

Opinion? Have you tried to stream Netflix in 4K yourself? If not, you have no opinion on the matter.

Watch The Blacklist on Blu-ray disc, then go and stream it in 4K on Netflix. Netflix's stream looks much better than the 1080p disc.

My only gripe with streaming, which is why I love to use, but not replace physical, is that it can be inconsistent. I have a 150Mbps down connection, and over Wi-fi (most people use this) upstairs, it's back and forth, in and out and goes from gorgeous 4K, to a subpar 480p then back up to 1080 and 4K, vice versa at times. I now use ethernet and it takes just about 30 seconds to go up to and stay at 4K for the duration of the episode, but when I play next, same thing. Until our service providers don't throttle, I can't see MYSELF adopting streaming only as the only way I enjoy movies or TV shows. I'll go physical on the ones I enjoy a lot or rewatch, and use Netflix and the sort as a rental service.

Agree. I'll enjoy the 4K current streams as best possible versions of these shows/movies, until the actual discs come out and hopefully fix that compared to stream.

Late February for Ultra HD Blu-ray releases.
Hope this is true, but good to see a more recent update on a window. What I'm curious about is pricing and bundles.

Typically, if a Digital Copy is included with a DVD it's standard definition, and with Blu-ray it's 1080p. Will the Digital Copies of 4K be 4K resolution, too? If so, I assume Vudu and other apps will have to update. Hope they don't make a new program for us to sign up for.

If a DVD comes out (street date release week) for like $14.99, a Blu-ray for liek $19.99, I hope the 4K is no more than $29.99 release week. Thought I saw a boxart for Amazing Spider-Man 2 in this thread that showed artwork with a banner saying "UltraHD + Blu-ray + Digital Copy". That's fine with me, and hope they don't ever include DVDs with them.

If one cares about audio quality they do not need to stream to have an opinion, that one is pretty cut and dry.

Ive watched Netflix originals streamed at 1080p with DD+ 5.1 and then on Blu with lossless, Ill take the current Blu-ray picture and lossless audio over a higher quality video feed and worse audio. For me, audio is just as important, if not more important than the quality of the image, especially when we are talking about the level of Blu-ray image currently.

I wish I had that luxury. Unfortunately not all of us have the equipment or the environment where high quality audio actually makes a difference.

Movies and series with RAW 4K+ as source format, can be 4K remastered later, right? (if archived in 4K)

2013 was a particularly tough year for us

But, to your question directly, the answer is yes, however, as previously noted close to 3 years ago, it is much cheaper to do a 4K finish from the get-go rather than going back and remastering.

Tell that to the studios still mastering films in 2K.

A lot of films are captured in 4K/5K resolution or higher, but then mastered and CGI'd at 2K.

Heck, even CBS who made a big deal about rescanning negatives for ST:TNG only remastered them at 1080.

Here's something AACS2 related:

Something must be seriously wrong with your setup/decoder. I have yet to see macroblocking on Netflix UHD (2160).

I'm going to guess that at CES 2016 is where we will get our first firm release dates and specs on the first Ultra HD Blu-Rays

Too funny, after Bill’s 2013 disparaging editorial (fraught with technological error I might add) about 4K Blu-ray entitled “Suppose they gave us 4K and Nobody Really Cared”, as a good salesman would , he’s now changed his tune (by placating his readership) and promoting the format even sooner than Geoff and I’d predicted.
