I don't think a PS5 will have a disc drive at all.... It's BDA that is launching this format 3 years too late.... With PS4 and XONE they would have had 40M Players sold automatically right now... Prepare for 600$ stand-alone players ![]() |

What Sony is saying is that they don't want to have to install new UHD Blu-ray drives nor chips that can decode H.265, or read 10 bit, HDR, etc. content in an expanded PS4 that is already almost at the end of its life cycle. |

It's not even 2 years old! It will last at least 5 more years.... And you are wrong: PS4 can easily decode H.265, we are talking about the disc drive here.... And that's the nail in the coffin for BDA: a firmware upgrade will make it compatible with UHD streaming services but NOT with UHD Blu-ray DISCS... |

Bit puzzled by that. My point was if Sony can add a UHD drive that is compatible with current discs and its established as a format (very important), I could see them add one. I'm not saying it's likely, just that I could imagine that and not being too surprised. They won't be driving the format, that's clear, so it depends on demand. (unless you mean UHD players aren't compatible with current blurays in which case I've been left behind knowledge-wise, which wouldn't be the first time) Last edited by KRW1; 10-23-2015 at 05:51 PM. |

Aye, but it's not a recent development. The basic specs were revealed in January (and are confirmed by the recent BD-ROM 3.0 White Paper): https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=1245

A standard blu-ray drive can't read a 3 layer disk even with firmware update yet in 2010 Sony filed a patent claiming standard blu-ray players could read 3-4 layer Panasonic tweak to 33 GB/layer disks but not reliably. The 2010 BD-R and BDXL specs were supposed to support rewritable disks and 4 layer BDXL which I think standard blu-ray drives can read with firmware update. Is this not true cause Wikipedia has 4-8 layer disks from other companies able to be read on Standard drives with firmware update? Last edited by jeff_rigby; 10-23-2015 at 08:06 PM. |
