With 3D it's a personal preference as to whether someone thinks a movie looks better in 2D or 3D. With me it depends on the movie and whether I'm in the mood to watch 3D or not. 3D movies are bundled with their 2D versions and plenty of people (myself included) watch both.
With 4K I highly doubt there will be anyone arguing that 2K looks better. Plenty of people won't want to upgrade because of the expense (this is true of upgrading from DVD to Blu-ray as well) but they aren't saying that 4K looks worse as many people do with 3D. There certainly would never be a case where someone with a 4K TV would ever watch the 2K version of a movie on that TV when they have the 4K version. |

Let me put it this way, if it is 4k by itself then I won't be buying them until I have a 4k environment (like I did with BD). But if they are combo packs with a HD version also I will buy them from the get go (like I did with 3D) because it makes sense (saves on a double dip later and you have a small collection of films to pick from when you finally get the new equipment and install it) |

What I mean is that I don't know if every HD BD player out there can handle a "larger" disk (let's say 100GB BD disks) and if not then that disk won't work on that HD BD player and in that sense having an HD copy on that disk would be useless for those players, on the other hand if the guy has a 4k BD player he won't need the 1080p version because the 4k player will just down scale the 4k to 1080p so it is definitely useless for those players. |

But there is nothing besides the drives to play them. The new discs may need other supporting software and hardware supporting the drives, which the current players do not have.

not sure what you mean. Are you talking the new UBD specs (such as playing a 4k 60p HVEC copy of the film) or just 100GB BD disks? If the former then I agree but it is irrelevant to the discussion since Jim said "the higher capacity discs can't be read by current Blurays" the assumption is the data is not the issue. If the latter (for example if some of the longer films like LOTR or Cleopatra that are split on two BD50's came out as a single BD100 with the same content) then you are wrong, there are some stand alone BD players out there that can read and play back 100GB disks (I have seen BDXL work on them), the issue is not, like Jim stated, that none of them can but that not all of them (I am guessing) can do so. That means that Bob might buy a 100GB disk and the 1080p content will play on his 1080p player but when Joe tries that same disk it does not play in his 1080p player.

agree (especially since 48p might not necessarily work well with the TVs). But my point was simply that if 48p is considered HFR then 60p should also be considered HFR since it is higher and so "Sigh. Doesn't look like HFR is going to make it." is wrong
