FWIW, I saw this last night and just thought the movie was good, not great. The technical aspects were, of course, terrific, but the story just didn’t grab me like the original. Aside from the opening few minutes (which were basically an update of the original movie), there are no 80’s rock tracks in the soundtrack. And darn it, I know I’m aging myself in saying this, but it just doesn’t feel like Top Gun to me without that. The score is incredibly nondescript. Using The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again” during a training sequence was…just an odd choice IMO. The film does improve as it goes along, and it’s pretty much gold in the last half hour, but it feels VERY 2022, and I personally wouldn’t have minded a bit more 1986. But then again, I’m old. I’m sure most people will adore it. I never shook the feeling that I was watching Cruise in a demo reel, not Maverick as a character in a true sequel. But…clearly I’m in the minority on this movie, so…I hope everyone else enjoys more than I did. I’d give the original a very strong three stars and this one a very weak three stars if I had to give a star rating. But whereas I love the original for pretty much every aspect, this one is buoyed pretty much exclusively by the action scenes for me.

When it hits the speed of sound and above on May 27, reviews should abound in masses.
* Someone's quick review, very (from the premičre in Cannes) ... https://m.rediff.com/movies/review/t...w/20220521.htm More about Tom Cruise (avec extręme préjudice) than the rest (everything else flying in the skies). I'm in no rush; I got all the time in the world, and beyond. _____ * Extra: |

I saw it in IMAX tonight and it was absolutely outstanding. The fight scenes were incredible and I think this had way more heart than the first one. This is how you do a sequel, especially to a movie made 36 years. It's updated yet nostalgic, looks backwards yet move forwards, and has some of the most amazing action scenes you'll ever see, and without the use of CGI. A must-see in the theaters, and in IMAX if possible.

Five stars
As I was watching Top Gun: Maverick, the 2022 sequel to the iconic 1986 blockbuster, Top Gun, I saw every plot point coming from a mile away. I knew exactly when a character would see someone looking at him through a window, I knew exactly which character would receive a military funeral, and I knew exactly when a character would save the day at just the right time. For this particular screen story, however, predictability and comfort are assets. The experience of watching this movie is akin to that of trying on an old leather jacket from my high school days over three decades ago ago and enjoying the feel of home. I love being transported back to the familiar grounds of the titular fighter tactics training school, I love hearing the Harold Faltermeyer music during the opening shots, I love seeing a pilot sternly lectured after going below the hard deck, I love seeing cocky pilots one-up each other at the local bar, and I love the exhilaration of seeing underdogs triumph by conquering their inner insecurities. During his 1980s winning streak of films, Tom Cruise excelled at a certain archetype, the rowdy and carefree guy with an endearing devil-may-care grin who is forced by circumstances to mature and to overcome an extreme difficulty. In Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise's Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, now a highly decorated test pilot with a knack for pushing the envelope with both mach speeds and with the patience of his superiors, finds his life thrown into turmoil when he is ordered to train a younger batch of Top Gun graduates for an apparent suicide mission, and when the possibility of having to send Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, none other than the son of Maverick's own long-deceased best friend and co-pilot, “Goose”, into battle reopens old confidence-shattering traumas. As with its predecessor, this sequel presents us with character arcs, in the safe confines of a theater, that inspires us to stand back up in our own lives when we are knocked down. Audiences do not flock to such movies expecting A24 Studios arthouse horror plot twists. We simply want to see something that makes us feel good. With the original Top Gun, the late director Tony Scott graced the screen with visuals of beautiful sunlit magic hour splendor blended with window-blind noir shadows, a look and feel that changed cinema for years to come. This new entry, helmed by Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion, TRON: Legacy), adeptly immerses us in the exact same color palettes and lighting styles, so much so that one would swear that scenes were shot with identical mid-1980s film stock. The use of montage music, heavy with classic rock favorites, further reinforces the notion that none of us ever actually left the Top Gun Fightertown USA settings. Even the fighter jets are the same, for reasons specified by the operation requirements and the training needed for such a task. I always joke that Top Gun was the most distinctly “1980s” movie of the 1980s. Top Gun: Maverick, is the most “1980s” movie that was not actually shot during the 1980s. A modern flavor is thrown into the fold by way of the operation that Maverick is training the younger best-of-the-best to complete, the targeted destruction of a uranium facility behind enemy lines. There is a noticeable Mission: Impossible heist aesthetic to the planning and execution of this task that is riveting in its own right, probably even to those who never saw the original film. Events during the final 20 minutes of this movie are ridiculously implausible even by Top Gun standards, but the adrenaline buzz of practical effects splendor carries us through even the most bonkers developments. The younger pilots, namely “Rooster” (Miles Teller), “Hangman” (Glen Powell), “Phoenix” (Monica Barbaro), and “Bob” (Lewis Pullman), do not upstage Cruise's Maverick at any point, but they are multilayered and engaging enough to captivate viewers. Jennifer Connelly has an underwritten role as Maverick's old flame, a local bartender, but she plays it with an undeniable spunk. Jon Hamm steps into Tom Skerritt's shoes from the first film as a no-nonsense official. Finally, a cameo from a key player in the previous film provides an emotional high point. The need-for-speed commitments of the cast and crew to deliver something special for fans of the first movie is evident during every frame. Because we truly care for the characters, the end result, however predictable and nostalgic, still gives us the feeling that we are flying into the danger zone. Top Gun: Maverick is summer cinema done right. Last edited by The Great Owl; 05-25-2022 at 05:48 AM. |

Sure. It was the story of a young Naval pilot, a civilian instructor, and their torrid romance despite having no chemistry whatsoever. It involved gorgeous visuals, exciting aerial sequences, and a great music score/soundtrack. Oh, and something about being the best of the best, and the classified events surrounding the death of the pilot's father. There's also a gratuitous volleyball scene.
Dear God, I miss the '80s. |
