Default Article that made me worry less about Paramount shift

I just read an article that actually made sense to me and made me worry less about the whole Paramount shift. Just read it for yourself:

http://www.tvpredictions.com/blurayresearch082307.htm

Bottom line: HD-DVD owners didn't get anything new as Paramount was already releasing on HD-DVD, Blu-ray just lost a little bit.

But that's not really true as HD DVD now has a slice of pie all to themselves when they had to share it before. There is some comfort that HD DVD owners can take from that.

BD still has a lopsided share of the HD studios. BD's CE support is even more lopsided. Fox's fall releases by themselves will more than counter anything Paramount can do. Expect the sales gap to grow. All this move did was give HD-DVD *a* blockbuster for the holiday season. Before, they were banking on Heroes and Bourne (which is big, but not that big).

Sony needs to just find a way to put a blu-ray player on the market at the same price point. The trade in thing would never work, people who have hd-dvd mainly bought it for the single reason that it is about 200 bucks less then a comparable blu player and are not going to toss it away and spend another 300 dollars to get a blu player and then have useless hd-dvd disc that they could never use again. Find a way to put a well equipped blu player on the market for the same 200 dollar price point and then they will have something.

Lol then HD DVD would say "We sold more players!"

We still have Spiderman 1, 2 & 3 HD, DVD does not. We still have Star Wars Septilogy, HD DVD does not (If Lucas would release a box set this year, HD DVD owners would be forced to purchase a Blu-ray player.) We still have Alien Quadrilogy, HD DVD does not. We still have Pirates Of The Caribbean: At Worlds End, HD DVD does not. We still have Pixar movies, HD DVD does not. We have Disney, Sony, 20th Century Fox/MGM, HD DVD does not. Steven Spielberg supports Blu-ray, HD DVD he does not... I think we will be just fine. Will take a little longer to win that's all... Pulling out doesn't get you anywhere...

Without FOX BD was doing fine and exceeding by a ratio 2:1

NOW PARAMOUNT IS OUT AND FOX IS BACK

SO who is better from a point of VIEW

SURE it is FOX\MGM and our sales of BD will be Outstanding and Hillarious.

yeah everyone needs to chill out and wait for the Neilsen Figures, I expect 300 will be at least 3:1 for Blu-ray this week - so when the dust settles we'll let the numbers talk.

Paramounts decision won't mean a damn thing if the blu-ray keeps pulling away in software sales and with the movies we have on the way, I don't see the momentum slowing down anytime soon

This is just a way to put positive spin on what is really negative. Wouldn't we all agree that Disney going neutral would be negative?

But.. using the same as above, we could say: Blu-ray owners didn't lose anything, HD DVD just gained a little bit.

No matter how you look at it, its not good for blu-ray, but its not devastating either. Disney or Fox going neutral or HD DVD exclusive would be much more damaging and neither is likely to happen.

Studios aren't stupid, they know that this will not win the war.
There are only 2 reasons for this pay-off.

1) The first step of many to come that will give HD-DVD better foothold, in theory, to challenge Blu-ray. This is doubtful but possible.

2) To prolong the war to further confuse and alienate consumers from the HD optical disc market. This makes a big gap for Digital Downloads to fill in. And guess who is trying to make digital downloads the next format? Micro$oft.

Don't forget DIE HARD. but man this Christmas is going to be exciting. Not only because of the thick release schedule but because even as frustrating as it is, I'm enjoying the play by play of this war. The suspense is keeping me hooked. Just waiting and watching for who's announcing what and the gamesmanship that follows. Super engrossing...especially considering how badly I want...how badly we all NEED Blu to win. the future of High Def Home Entertainment is on the line here. without the PS3, Blu is nothing. without HD-DVD, the world would be a more peaceful place. seriously

Blades of Glory

Just so everyone knows it's available on DUD and:

"Also, exclusively available on HD-DUD"

Good information to know, thanks Paramount.

Default Way to finish up HD-DUD for good

Let's somehow get MGM & Sony to release all the Bond movies exclusively on Bluray, that'll pretty much finish up HD-DUD.

Not that I think they would do that, but even if they did, it would put a dent in the format war. I don't think any single series of films (including LOTR or SW) could end the format war at this point... It's going to take a major turn of events.

This war will end when BDA & Sony lower prices substantially and release more content. For this to occur, most hardware manufacturers will have to agree to either lower their margins to practically nothing or even take a small short term loss (not going to happen) and quality releases need to occur - haven't seen much to date, although this trend is growing. Added to all this, Sony & BDA need to get all their specs finalized, approved and implemented to avoid market confusion as well as avoid confusion within their own ranks. The issue I have is that I think both Sony & the BDA have been very slow to make any aggressive moves and we all know in war, if your going to go to battle like this, you will sustain a lot of casualties (which has occurred), more then if you went for the quick kill.

I just think it will take time. And I don't think this is bad either. The competition has been good in driving down prices and ensuring quality is good.

Blu-ray only needs to do 1 thing. Keep growing at the same pace or faster pace than HD DVD. Even if it stays 2:1, at some point blu-ray will be looking at a sale of a movie at 1 million copies. HD DVD would only see 500,000 copies of that. When any studio starts to see over half a million potential sales lost, they'll change. Maybe even sooner - I'm not really sure what the magic number is.
