Default Will the Paramount Announcement Cause More Piracy?

Let me first say that I, like everyone here is very upset about this announcement.

But I also want to say:

If Piracy gets worse the Studios have ONLY THEMSELVES TO BLAME.

At this point how can any consumer be expected to buy two formats? My feeling is that this announcment will cause the war to drag on forever. We are now headed for SACD and DVD Audio.

Honestly I hope that Paramount's movies are all ripped off because they made the choice to leave BD+ and better copy protection behind.

Would serve them right for going HD-DVD exclusive now in such an anti-consumer way.

I am never going to buy HD-DVD, and am considering scaling back my Blu-ray purchases to must have titles only.

Yes, it will. People will just rip the movie out of the HD DVD and burn it onto a Blu-ray disc.

Right on. But! Lets remember when freaken Universal announced his movies for HD-DVD and they had to print an appology the next day... Though I don't think any studio is stupid enough to do that again, it's possible. I mean, they did switch to a format that is dying. Why the hell would you bored the Titanic just a little while before the iceberg?

Sounds logical. Once the price of BD-R discs goes down a little. Then people that only want blu-rays should be able to buy movies that somone ripped from HD-DVD and put on to blu-ray. Even at the current price of BD-R it's still practical.

More i think about it, more i am ok with it. HD DVD is cracked for the life of the format, so i will just rent/rip the discs and burn them onto BD-R discs for ~8 bux a peice. Cheaper then buying retail paramount blu-ray discs anyway. So in a way, im saving money by not supporting paramount anymore.

Default What Have You Done To Show Your Loyalty?

In the wake of the disappointing news by Paramount comitting treachery, what have you done to show your support for Blu-Ray? I bought two exclusive Blu-Ray titles, "Black Hawk Down" and "Underworld Evolution."

Is their quality loss when going from HD DVD to BD? Dont you have to re-encode the video causing the loss?

I doubt it because they use the same encoding as we do.

Excellent news!!! Continue to show your support people. The blow today was a big one, but Fox has our backs and we gained a lot more than we lost.

Piracy is certainly one alternative. But as a movie fan... I'm already overwhelmed with more than 50 BDs I have not seen... just sitting on the shelf.

I can probably live without Blade or Glory or Transformers indefinitely... they aren't the kinds of movies I enjoy. But Simpsons and Die Hard 4... that is another story!

I was thinking about taking the two Paramount movies I own (Shooter and Flags of our Fathers) and mailing them back to Paramount.

With also maybe... a dog turd... or a $100 bill torn into little tiny pieces. Something eloquent and/or artistic.

Microsoft has always been the kind of company to copy (or steal, or monopolize) other people's work and claim it as their own. Windows was based on Mac OS. Vista is an exact copy of Mac OS 10.4! (It's actually really really pathetically sad).
I have done well myself not buying into Micro$oft's war machine. Just get a mac, use non-M$ products, avoid windows when you can. I don't blame Bill Gates that much anymore.. but what he created is a monster!

BOYCOTT MICRO$OFT!
Amen to that, Captain!!!!!!!
My Mac is 4 1/2 years old, yet I still love the hell out of it!!
Can't wait til next year when I finally upgrade to either the new iMac or maybe even the Mac Pro.

Jodi

P.S. F**K Micro$oft!!!!!

P.S.S. I think, therefore iMac

FUTURE PAIN for Comic Fans:
With UNIVERSAL and PARAMOUNT on the OTHER SIDE now, this parallels tragically with Comic Franchises MARVEL (Games - Microsoft; Movies - Paramount & Universal...except XMEN and SPIDEY, thank GOD!!) and DC (Games - Sony; Movies - Warner). With the increased popularity of Comics to film, a dark cloud is forming for High-Def Blu-Ray Media...with DVD as the silver lining. Now the real kicker...IF WARNER DEFECTS, this war will indeed become very BLOODY!

Default Interesting Thing About Paramount

From a business/consumer stand point, today's news is a pretty big blow to the BD camp. On a personal note, however, I realized that to date I haven't purchased a single Paramount BD. And the releases that I'm excited about, Close Encounters, Ratatouille, Cars, Blade Runner, Spider-Man, not a single one is a Paramount title.

So I was curious (and I'm sorry if this has already been posted) and looked up the highest grossing films of all time. With the exception of 2 Spielberg-directed movies, there isn't a single title by Paramount (or Universal) in the top 20...or top 30!...that I'm interested in getting in hi def.

Default Blu-ray group resting on laurels, needs to wake up!

The BD people have been enjoying their "success" for too long. They are making a tidy profit on players at $500+, selling discs for $10 or $15 more than the same DVD, and proclaiming victory as often as possible.

If they were intelligent about business... they would take an unfortunate lesson from Microsoft. You undercut your competition out of the gate. THEN jack up prices to increase margins. This is exactly the HD-DVD strategy.

It is about time to end this, and get it DONE. Stop messing around by milking the market. Drop prices, increase sales, get a 90% market share. Business 101.
