personally there is nothing worse or more confusing than trying to download a movie onto your computer only to find that you want to watch it on your BIG SCREEN tv, and have to learn how to hook it up.. only to find that you need a new graphics card to handle the resolution, only to find that it will take you hours to download the movie, only to find that it takes up your entire hard drive, only to discover that it is highly compressed in 720 (or maybe 1080i at best), and THEN only to find out that it has NO surround sound....

I think not...

The only reason it had any popularity to begin with is the illegal downloading market full of geeks and nerds that stole movies via internet and watched them on their laptops in class. I don't think that will appeal to the mass market.

M$ just wants their XBOX to become the main movie source... which it WILL NOT!

No. While I agree that P/DW announcement has harmed the adoption of HDM (High Def Media), Blu-ray will not just disappear.

Blu-ray will remain a solid niche format, selling to enthusiasts. But, the general adoption is going to slow right down. People will stay on the fence, and the war will continue until 2009.

you wouldn't have posted this if you didn't want us to tell you that you're crazy. you're crying for help. its obvious you're not alone in your feelings. i share them too and was in the same situation. going back and forth...but...but transformers...seriously. listen to me: buy the dvd and upconvert. we can do it for 18 months. it will fly by. with the power of sony, fox, lionsgate, mgm and disney, our streets are lined with gold. we've been spoiled. if you absolutely MUST own an HD-DVD player for a handful of movies (i'm supposing a few hundred bucks is chump change to you) then at least buy it used and don't contribute a dime to their cause. they're the ones hurting the consumer. Blu-ray is superior. retailers, studios (even Paramount and Universal know it), manufacturers and consumers have made that clear. ignore your impulse and listen to wisdom - hang in there. im right there with you....

buy transformers on dvd.

Nope, it'll be on Blu-ray... Just a BD-R and P/DW gets no royalties. There is no such thing as HD DVD exclusive.

It really didn't take much with some people for some flip flopping and cutting and running. No resolve. No guts. No heart. No nuthin'.

Talk about soft and spoiled. It's been months of nothing but good BD news and the moment anything remotely bad happens it's time to either sell out and buy HD-DVD or just go back to DVD.

It's a format WAR people. HD-DVD had to find some desperate way to survive a little bit longer and they did it. They were facing sure annihilation at Christmas and they had to pull out every last stop. It reeks for the desperation that it truly is.

HD-DVD was overdue to finally do SOMETHING for themselves.

It's bad news. It's annoying. It's a set back. It's one lost battle, not a lost war.

Get some perspective. Look at the big picture.

But you know what?

I'm almost glad for the news now just so we can start weeding out the chaff. Now we start seeing what some people are really made of and what it's all worth.

Good riddance.

Default Director Fallout?

do you think that Studios gain or lose director support due to their HD alliance?
case in point: Michael Bay & Spielberg. meaning to say - will directors refuse to sign contracts with studios that are exclusive to a format that they don't believe in - which impairs their artistic control?

I'll never download movies. What happens if I want to watch my movies in another room, or I want to take one over to a friends house to watch it? I can't do it without moving my entire hard-drive from place to place.

What happens when I fill it up? I have to buy another movie recorder? Hell no!

Don't "sell out". "Buy in" instead.

I'll be watching Transformers in 1080p, that's for sure. HD DVD won't get a dime of my money. Nor will Paramount. They're dead to me.

But with HDD becoming larger, and even the idea of expandable hardware (add a second) the technology is booming.

Technology is moving a little fast these days too, alittle to fast. CD's and VHS lasted 30+years, Got my 1st CD player in like 1983 or something, DVDs are what 10-12years old now? and new format is here

It's just like Universal now, where I say: "I can wait for the better version of that movie that will be on Blu in about a year so anyways."

And how is a compressed format (MD) better than CD (uncompressed PCM)?

Default dont give up!

remember good things come to those who wait. it will only be a matter of time before hdud folds and goes away and then paramount will come back with its tail between its legs like a dog beaten by mike vick.

I don't think HD choice affects them much at all.

However, I think signing exclusivity agreements that affect their royalty payments without consulting them or negotiating with them for compensation does affect it.

Imagine a realtor selling you a nice house where they show you how the property value is going to go up and how great the neighborhood will be then a few months after you move in the realtor sells the land down the street to a paper mill. Things like that destroy relationships and undermine trust.

I'm not waiting. This weekend I'll probably watch Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead if I play my cards right.
