I've actually seen that happen, sortof.. They built a new subdivision in my city, fairly rich (no house below about $350,000, some well over a million). This isn't California either, an average house costs $200,000 here.

Anyway all the biggest, richest houses backed onto a golf course. Which within a year was ripped up and moved a short distance away, so they could build another subdivision where it had been (with rich houses backing onto the golf course, naturally!)

Some of the houses lost up to $200,000 value overnight... Kinda sucks eh.

Getting back to the main point.. I wonder if Michael Bay has any lawsuit options...

Me too!

But that's not to say it doesn't work for other people. Actually Netflix has already begun advertising movie sreaming from your computer. As a rental service, I like it...but never for permanance.

i.e. Face/Off??

They can't seriously release this now on HD DVD only having promised it on both for months? Surely that can't be done can it?
I have pre-order Top Gun and Face Off from Amazon and I havent received any cancelation yet....But im sure it will be soon.....If they pulled BoG which was coming out next week Im sure this are also gone....

Don't sell out dude, I'am really pissed about this decision too but there is no way in hell I will ever support HD DUD. Just wait out the 18 months and I'am sure we'll see Transformers on Blu. In the mean time just buy the DVD and watch it upconverted it won't be the same but it should get you by.

Blu for ever, screw HD DUD!!!!!!!!!

I like seeing all my movies stacked up too... not so much when the stand falls over though hehe.

I see some very big problems with the downloading concept... enthusiasts won't like the drop in quality, casual people won't like the lack of portability, people without high speed won't get it at all... and even with high speed... I have an 8 Mbit connection, assuming max speed it would take between 2 and 3 hours just to download a regular DVD... much slower than going to a store to rent/buy!

Ridiculous. Yes things like Itunes tv will grow but never replace a 25gb+ movie file. Pretty soon more people will have 1080p tvs and they will need HD movies as regular DVDs look like poop on a hi def system and so would Itunes TV crap.

Default Thinking of selling out due to Paramount Announcement...

Don't do it!!! I'm not happy too, but I'm not leaving Blu-ray. Trust me, I am very upset about Top Gun not coming out. We need to focus on buying Warner Brothers Blu-rays. The are starting to see that they are making more money from BD than HD-DVD.

[QUOTE=CptGreedle;173497]personally there is nothing worse or more confusing than trying to download a movie onto your computer only to find that you want to watch it on your BIG SCREEN tv, and have to learn how to hook it up.. only to find that you need a new graphics card to handle the resolution, only to find that it will take you hours to download the movie, only to find that it takes up your entire hard drive, only to discover that it is highly compressed in 720 (or maybe 1080i at best), and THEN only to find out that it has NO surround sound...."

Partially true. Though I have a Dlink DSM520 that can display HD files from my PC to my TV and send the DD soundtrack to my stereo if they file is HD. It is not too complicated as you do not need to hook up your PC to the TV and change graphic cards, etc. You can get Dolby Digital but not Dolby TrueHD. But it is a bit more of a hassle then what the average consumer would put up with. But again, that is also a problem, not enough usually care about the quality to begin with, DVD and standard cable broadcast satisfy enough people just like MP3's do so even Blu-ray or HD-DVD maybe too much for the majority of people to care about

It will never be the norm. 720p sucks and download times take way to long. At least half of the US as speeds below 6 MBs. And 6 MBs isnt fast enough. Plus you have to buy mass amounts of Hard Drives. Plus Im a collector and need to see the box it came in.

For pre-recorded media, I agree. But it was a great replacement for Cassette Tapes (I don't know the exact English term, but you know, those little boxes with analogue tape in them). No more waiting for rewinding, no side flipping: for storing song ideas and quick compilations to take on the train it was great. To replace CDs it was just not up to the task.

Please get you facts straight
Blu-ray is NOT a Sony format but comprised of technologie from numerous companies with Apple, Sun and TDK having quite an impact not to mention Philips.
As far as selection of players if I don't like Toshiba then what? (I'm not a big gammer so don't want box's and cables everywhere so that rules out the XBOX add on).
Strange you don't like any of the 300 or so movies released on Blu-ray as I think they have finally got around to releasing Salt water aquariums on Blu-ray. Nope troll meter has just registered TROLL.

Godfather is directed by Francis Ford Coppola, who's first hi-def movie, Bram Stoker's Dracula, is on Blu-ray only. So, I think he's of the same mind as Spielberg.

Universal will just rehash their HD DVD offerings/encodings on Blu-Ray when the time comes. Not sure what you mean by "better version"?

This is the danger with Paramount now. They had been using AVC encoding lately...now we're gauranteed low bit rate VC-1 when they release on Blu-Ray again after this 18 month fiasco (assuming M$ doesn't re-up with them). @ Paramount

Yes, not on Blu-ray for at least 18 months. But, it doesn't mean it will be out any time soon on HD DVD.

And if it is, there are already people discussing how easy it is to port HD DVD VC-1 to Blu-ray R/RE.

That sort of talk will keep it firmly locked away, I suspect.

Talk about soft and spoiled. It's been months of nothing but good BD news and the moment anything remotely bad happens it's time to either sell out and buy HD-DVD or just go back to DVD.

It's a format WAR people. HD-DVD had to find some desperate way to survive a little bit longer and they did it. They were facing sure annihilation at Christmas and they had to pull out every last stop. It reeks for the desperation that it truly is.

HD-DVD was overdue to finally do SOMETHING for themselves.

It's bad news. It's annoying. It's a set back. It's one lost battle, not a lost war.

Get some perspective. Look at the big picture.

But you know what?

I'm almost glad for the news now just so we can start weeding out the chaff. Now we start seeing what some people are really made of and what it's all worth.

Good riddance.
JTK, this is very likely the best post you've ever made, and you've made some damn good ones before.

This is probably true. I'll still wait to buy it on Blu, though.

At that point, I'll vote with my wallet just as I always have and always will.

Wow, that does suck. You're right. By going to the inferior format, they will have to go to VC-1 and lower those bitrates.

You kids enjoy all that now.

With a couple of exceptions (Transformers, Shrek) I think that Paramount will hold off releasing their "A" list for the next 18 months. They'll save the best when they return to Blu-ray.
