Doesn't matter to me.

I only care about new releases now, not replacing my old DVD catalog (unless it's something VERY important to me... that's like a whole dozen movies tops... none of which are on that list).

Transformers is the only movie I would have probably purchased from Paramount anytime in the foreseeable future. Still only if it _was not_ the encode from HDDVD carried over. I feel sorry for HDDVD on this title... It has the PQ/AQ of the DVD! I mean... wow. Talk about robbed.

Paramount stole nothing from me. They only showed me that they no longer desire my business, and I will happily oblige them. I will not buy any of their product past, present, or future.

So stop with the whining, this threads OP is just a troll stirring up discord.

can't blame the encode, blame the way it was filmed. Once you get past that and realize that was the directors intent, and accept the grain...you actually start apprecciating the other merits of the PQ & the Film. I love this movie, so I had to get it. Should rea more like this:

Hustle & Flow - Not Interested (Filmed too grainy for my taste)

The picture quality of Paramount titles was never very good.

I have the Italian job, and it looks awful in my opinion. Not much better then the SD-DVD upconverted. same goes for Mission impossible 1 and 2, and several others I've rented.

No big loss, with Paramount, they just dont' put out quality transfers or sound. The only exception will probably be transformers, but the rest is not worth it in my opinion.

i dont know why but it just bothers me that we wont be able to get these anymore. Personally there are more than a few that i really want but dont already have... it just blows
I personally don't think there is even one "must own" title in that whole bunch. Several good ones like MI3 and Shooter, but definitely nothing that's a must own.

Arrow Blockbuster movies helps, but will it win the format war?

When you think about it, Star Wars didn't help Laserdisc emerge as format king. But it must have had some influence on people buying them. So all this talk about how Star Wars and Harry Potter, etc will win the war are unfounded in history. But how much will it influence blu-ray winning?

Why would this be different? A couple of reasons it could be. Blu-ray may be a new technology, but it is backwards compatible with a widely adopted and trusted format - DVD. It isn't a completely new format like Laserdisc was to BetaMax and VHS.

Laser disc was based on another widely adopted and trusted format - the LP record. However, high prices, few movie selections at the time didn't gain it adoption like other formats. Unlike Beta and VHS, you could not record your favorite shows, and at the time that was a MAJOR selling point. Naturally, people went with the cheaper format which did both and had the most support -VHS.

DVD was based on another widely adopted and trusted format - CD. Those little 4-3/4" discs are space saving God-send compared to bulky tapes and plate sized Laserdiscs. Not to mention near instant access to your favorite song, or movie scene. Size does matter. Smaller was better in this case.

CD was based on another formerly widely adopted and trusted format - the 5-1/4" floppy drive. If you pull out the inner disc, it should be the same size as a cd. The internal platter of a hard drive should also be the same size.

Blu-ray has the advantage of feeling secure. "Nothing better will be out for decades." At least, we hope so. If VHS could live such a long life, there is no reason why Blu-ray can't surpass it.

Blu-ray, like DVD, finally matches the true resolution of HDTV, and will in the foreseeable future. It is simply the best technology, but as we saw with Beta and VHS, best doesn't always win. The failing at that time was in the marketing and gladly, Sony did not repeat history - but Toshiba did.

Even General Patton and other great leaders needed an Army. In all, great movies will not win a war as much as a GREAT NUMBER OF MOVIES. Right now, we have that advantage. If the balance of power shifts, if just one more studio goes HD-DVD exclusive we stale mate.

Warner and Universal may actually already have plans to go exclusively blu-ray. But they are still marketers and not idiots. If Paramount is still producing HD DVD until December 2008, why not capture a piece of that market as well? It may not matter how many movies we buy as much as how much longer Paramount stays in that contract. Yet, we still need strong numbers to sway victory to our side when the time comes. Virtual stale mate - possibly the 100 month war.

Read my open letter in my signature line. It goes more into the war. Things most of us understand, but some newbies may not understand.

Now, what happens if 2160P Ultra HDTV becomes available?

It started out good with the Star Wars and Laserdisc. Then you started to slip with floppy discs. Then you lost me with Patton...

Dude, just making analogies on how most current technologies are still based on older technologies.

General Patton was a great leader. Blu-ray is the market leader in HDM. Yet, could Patton win the war alone - on just being great? No, he needed a strong army. As we need need a strong and great number of movies. In essence, I am saying great movies sways buyers, but it is not a war winner.

Transformers on HD-DVD will sell big, and potentially earn more adopters, but it will not win them the war - perhaps just a battle.

I really don't understand why there is still a war going on. With most of the world heavily favouring blu, why are the numbers in the US so important? It should be obvious to Studios that blu is overall way ahead in the world. Dropping HD-DVD would make everyone adapt and speed up the switch to Digital Media.
If the US favoured HD-DVD, would the rest of the world be forced to switch? I don't think so, but it would make us (north America) the laughing stock of home entertainment.

What matters most is overall content. You could magically create a new format today and pick any 5 movies to put on it (Star Wars, whatever) and it wouldn't do much of anything unless it was backed up with hundreds more titles of interest.

And that's why if BLU can land WB as an exclusive, it will be over sooner rather than later. BLU already has a nice catalog of exclusives (now and future) with Sony, Fox and Disney.

Paramount and Universal are fairly small and would easily be forced to market their content on BLU.

The content sells the hardware. It doesn't matter if someone looks and sounds better if the item isn't of interest. I'm sure many of us have bought something (or many) on BLU just for the PQ and AQ, but the mass market doesn't work that way.
