LOL - they said the same thing about High Definition. TV Broadcasters were very happy using 30/40 year old SD/NTSC equipment and did not want to make the huge investment required to move to HD. But it did happen. As more TV Broadcasters added HD equipment, it became a case of "are consumers not watching our broadcasts because they are only in SD?" "How are we going to make the HD investment pay off? We can't charge more for HD."

So the HD train moved along at pretty much a snail's pace until the Government decided to move from Analog to Digital with the drop dead date being 2009. Then the HD Train took off like a bat out of Hell.

If you had said 10 years, I might have agreed with you somewhat. But 5 years? Not a chance.

I met 8K would be the norm for the high-end market when 8K programming launches in another 5 years. I agree that in 10 years 8K would be more mainstream. Look at what happen to 4K Blu-ray format in 2016, it was the new high-end niche format. 5 years later many more people are buying 4K Blu-ray and streaming 4K content. So when 8K launches around 2026 with programming, it well take another 5 years (10 years like you said) to become mainstream.

Blu-ray.com has always been about discussing the ultra high-end, which some consumers purchase long before the mainstream consumer adopts.

Early 4K TVs didn't support HEVC so you couldn't stream 4K. They also did not have HDR.

Is Hollywood going to release their content to consumers in 12 bit color space? If they don't, upscaling 10 bit to 12 bit really won't be that noticeable.

As do I. It only took them 30+ years to go from 8bit to 10bit.

I would rather see an improvement in the Chroma Subsampling Rate. Like 4:2:2 instead of the 70 year old 4:2:0

Me too. Instead they will just cram more pixel count because it’s easier for the industry to sell.

Studios are already using 8K digital cameras and 16K digital cameras should be here in 5 to 10 years. Plus there are old movies from 1939 that received a 8K scan.

Enjoy your 4K Blu-ray discs, 4K satellite feeds, and 4K streaming for now. In another 5 years 8K displays should in theory have 8K streaming and 8K optical discs on the market to feed the display.

Lets see what actually ends up happing in the market. But 8K will be the next big thing 5 years from now in theory.

And the funny thing is that 8K is being used more and more in the industry for capture but NOT for finishing. 8K offers all sorts of advantages like being able to extensively reposition a shot, fuller chroma resolution when finishing it down at 4K or 2K (owing to Bayer sensors being so common) and just a 'smoother' image at point of capture. 8K usage is more in line with the mantra of better pixels rather than just more pixels.

People seem to forget that only one country in the world has committed to 8K for consumers: Japan. And to this day it is struggling. They are no further along almost 3 years later when their 8K SAT channel debuted (Dec. 2018).

High frame rate (=>120fps) is crucial for 8K, otherwise motion resolution is crap...
