But the Sharp 8k TV is not for consumers though right? is it fair to put it in the shootout? I've only seen one sharp 8k being used a while ago a buddy of mine that was working in a major film studio was using them for testing.

@Blu350z, We only use consumer TVs that are in mass production for our TV Shootout. Just waiting for confirmation on Sharp's entrance in the USA TV business.
@JohnAV, I'll check out the original image on my iPhone against the 8K TV image and report back. One thing for sure on 4K TV the image was greatly degraded and it looks significantly cleaner on the 8K TVs. |

Shall we make everyone happy whether they be willing or unwilling to pull the trigger on a new TV this year? Ergo, I predict the following upcoming reviews of top of the line new model TVs from AV journalists and fans alike, just substitute your favorite brand for xxxx.
2019 – “This is the best TV xxxx has ever produced, it has….” 2020 - “This is the best TV xxxx has ever produced, it has….” 2021 – “This is the best TV xxx has ever produced, it has….” etc. |

hah!, well you‘ve got a biased commercial interest in owners buying new stuff every year, you’re like that Teoh guy
anyway, if you’re interested and can get there, the DV World Tour is here tomorrow - https://form.jotform.us/91899361522163 |

8K is honestly the best TV resolution for retro games since almost every console game resolution can be an integer scale to 8K.
Integer scaling means no nearest neighbour filter nor shimmering. 240p x 18 = 4320p 480i/p x 9 = 4320p 720p x 6 = 4320p 1080i/p x 4 = 4320p 2160p x 2 = 4320p 4320p x 1 = 4320p 480i/p can't get an integer scale that fills the screen in 4K. The highest integer scale 480p can get to 4K is 4X 1920p, and it has to be either windowboxed in a 2160p frame, or it has to be upscaled with a nearest neighbour filter. And on top of that, even many handhelds support integer scaling to 8K: 144p (Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Bandai WonderSwan, Sega Game Gear) x 30 = 4320p 160p (Game Boy Advance) x 27 = 4320p 240p (3DS) x 18 = 4320p 272p (PSP) x 16 = 4352p (a pixel on the top and the bottom each get cut off to fill the screen) 544p (PS Vita) x 8 = 4352p (a couple of pixels on the top and bottom each get cut off to fill the screen) The big deal here is that the GBA can finally have an integer scale, since the original Game Boy can have a 5X scale to 720p and a 15X scale to 2160p but not the GBA. The only missing ones are the DS, which has no official way to play on a TV other than the Wii U Virtual Console, and the Atari Lynx. The 3DS is 240p. Too bad there isn't an HDMI output mod for the 3DS, let alone one that supports stereoscopic 3D. And of course, older games can be played on PC in 8K in a silky-smooth 60fps. It was a proof of concept chip prototype. They haven’t decided whether it’s going to be a standalone unit like the current Darbee or they’re just going to license it to the likes of Lumagen.

The inline FPGA in the Oppo 10xD series was just processing on the HD output of the SoC before the SI 4Kx2K processor, there was no HDMI interfaces involved, this is new territory they had to tackle. It why they dropped off the map. This is a ideal time for them to market while there is non-existent 8k content like it was for several years when it was all 4Kx2K upscaling for players. Yeah back then Oppo, Lumagen had it built in, and they also made available a external box that you could place on your HDMI chain. Built in was a superior solution, less noise artifacts. ![]() |
