Indeed, and I see a personal side effect of the outcome being that maybe it will put even more pressure on the Arsenal board to do something......as Man U qualifying for the Champions League makes it a more attractive place for recruiting world class talent as compared to Arsenal.

He says it was nothing to do with transfers but I think it was no coincidence that he quit on the day that Defoe announced he'd be going to Bournemouth, I reckon he didn't get the assurances from the board that he was looking for (having spent £40M just in the January window). And given the soul-searching that he did during the season about whether he really could turn it around at Palace I think he's kinda realised that this is only ever gonna be his lot in the Premiership: Fireman Sam, always coming to the rescue. He had the Big Job, THE biggest managerial job for any Englishman, but had to go after just 67 days and that will haunt him for the rest of his life. He was never, ever going to manage an Arsenal or Chelski or Man Utd so the England post really was the pinnacle for him and he's never gonna be back there again. He went to Palace to see if he'd get the taste for management back again, and he eventually did, BUT he just doesn't want another season of toil and struggle on the pitch and battling with the owners in the boardroom so he's jacked it in. That's my take on it, FWIW. |

Steed, I hope you don’t make yourself a stranger next season with Sunderland going to the Championship league and on the contrary, keep us informed as to what’s happening with the club. Do you plan on starting a Championship thread, or with Tob’s blessing, chime in here time to time with team news?

I haven't posted as much lately simply because we all knew our fate before the last game. Tob, yourself and D-Blitz were disappointed about missing out on 4th place and the rest of us knew our fate also. Cheers Penton Man. Now, onto today.......Come on Arsenal! ![]() |

It just felt like a special final, you know? In the last few years it's lost a bit of magic - and I include the Gunners' back to back triumphs in this as well as Palace losing to Man U last year - but this time it had a bit more magic to it, there was lots of bumpf in the papers on Saturday, and in the match itself Arsenal showed what they're still capable of on their day and Chelski were after completing the double (which has still only been done multiple times by two teams, Man U and Arsenal with 3x each).
As a result of this final (with both teams having already finished in the top 5) and Man U nabbing a CL slot then their Europa League qualifying round (for winning the League cup) passes onto Everton in 7th place, so well done vortex and good luck for the European adventure ahead. |
