Yeah, not a particular fan either.

This is our seventh time in them and we've gone up once.

Lost two finals (Leicester and QPR) and out in the QFs four times.

Never lost a penalty shoot out, but conceding a last minute winner against QPR after we'd dominated was pretty galling.

Last time I was at Derby, we were 0-3 down after 25 mins. Our coach broke down and we got into the game at 3.30! It was the days of Terry Butcher and our new signings (all in one car) crashed a car a couple of days before the match and were ruled out injured so we should have seen what was coming. We lost 0-5 and our old hero Marco Gabbiadini scored against us and just to top the day off, our own fans started to fight amongst themselves. It was a unpleasant day topped when a season ticket holder ran onto the pitch and ripped his season ticket up in front of the manager.

Not good!

Nothing against Derby though, used to enjoy watching you when Kitson was upfront way back.

Always loved the playoffs. Yes, Palace got fooked by Stevie Claridge shinning in the winner for Leicester in 1996 but big Dave Hopkin curled one in against Sheffield Utd a year later, we then went up against West Ham in 2004 and 9 years later did it again against Watford with Super Kev scoring the winning penalty in extra time.

The Kitson/Johnson/Gabbiadini line up was probably the most exciting team we've had in my life time. It was a real shame that they didn't go up. They got f**ked by Leicester in the playoff final as well - Steve f**king Walsh!

Although the team we had in the Premier League when Wanchope burst on to the scene was pretty good!

Yep, remember him as well. Was it with Derby when he scored that individual goal running half the length of the pitch?

Lol, yes, against Man Utd, at OT on his debut. We won 3-2. In truth we could have scored 5 before half time. Hung on a bit at the end, but fair play to the United fans, they applauded us off at FT.

They didn't seem keen on embracing new technology to assist referees.
Sounds right but other guys here might know for sure.

It doesn't seem to clear up controversy but actually adds to it, as people aren't sure what's going on and it still relies on humans to interpret what's going on and to decide if there was an infringement in the first place. As with run outs in cricket, the initial usage of a simple "was it over the line?" system has morphed into something larger and although it allows for correction of the absolute howlers it also runs into plenty of grey areas still.

But at least with cricket there's a limited amount of 'reviews' that teams can employ, separate from umpires looking at run outs or whether catches carried, whereas letting some blind goober in a TV truck in a Heathrow Airport car park decide whether a footy incident needs looking at doesn't sound right to me at all.
Well if that's the case, I think it would be good for like with American football for coaches to be allowed a limited number of video reviews only. Hell Geoff, right now in the Prem when I watch the half time highlight analysis of a soccer match just with the routine camera shots slowed down, it’s incredible how many blatant mistakes are made week in and week out because the refs don’t have the advantage of multiple angles of view.

I haven't followed the development of VAR in European soccer that closely but my gut feeling is the real reluctance by 'purists' to implementing it is that it could slow down the game too much and interfere with allotted TV coverage time for the matches. If the power brokers think video analysis will slow down the game too much, then cut out the time devoted to players’ play acting when *hurt* and have the refs ignore such shenanigans and play on until it’s quite obvious that the player isn’t faking it and actually really needs medical attention. Even when they're not faking it, very few situations require immediate medical attention.

The play acting is the one thing I despise about pro versus the more honest amateur soccer like in high school or college or even club teams where we never displayed such horsesh*t. Also there was no whining. If player(s) approached and crowed around a ref because they didn’t like a bad call, then a red card would come out immediately. Cut out some of the inherent time wasting measures in the game and replace the time gained with VAR.

The VAR will be used in this summer's World Cup my worry about that is how will some referee's from smaller countries who be doing bigger games for the first time cope with VAR for the first time too.
I think we will see more incidents at the World Cup and if it fails there i don't think we will see it take off the way FIFA want it too.

Yep, VAR is being thrown in at the deep end on the biggest footballing stage in the world and it could backfire spectacularly. I know that some of Europe's leagues have actually been using it in their top tiers for a year or two and the world hasn't yet ended or anything, but it could still go horribly wrong. Wronger than missing Lampard's blatant 'goal' against Germany in 2010, probably not, but then we now have goal-line tech for that...

As for the pace of the game, it's often so bitty these days for the reasons you mention Penton that VAR in itself wouldn't be too much of a major distraction if it were implemented properly, but there's still that air of uncertainty about who gets to decide what so I think that a set amount of challenges from each side would be a great idea, with perhaps referees overriding that w/ref to offsides (like with catches that don't carry in cricket, which are separate from the DRS challenges) as they're not that difficult to get right on a replay. As with anything in football it could end up being deployed tactically if a team needs a breather near the end of a game and a manager wants to interject, but this is the conundrum of VAR.

Penton: guess which teams contested the first competitive match to use VAR in the UK...

Palace against Brighton in the FA Cup, so not another London team but mos def our biggest rivals.

Palace just missed out on a top 10 finish which is absolutely ****ing miraculous given that they had the worst start to a professional football season in the entire history of the English game. We finished a good few places above Brighton, Charlton got dumped out of the League 1 playoffs by the Shrews, we'll be contesting our sixth straight year in the top flight next season which has never happened before, the proposal for the new Main Stand at Selhurst seems to be gathering pace...life's pretty damned sweet for a Palace fan right now. It'll all unravel in double-quick time once we sell Zaha, but that's life.

Just the various finals left to contest (FA Cup, Playoffs, Champs League) and then it's time for the Coupe du Monde! Football football football up to three times a day, I love it when these tourneys come around.

An ex-girlfriend of mine was one of those women who complained about too much football on TV, despite the fact that the World Cup was only every four years. But she didn't mind the damn soaps every single evening, week in week out!!

I was working in Gloucester during the last World Cup.

Left the office at 1550 every day, back to the hotel by 1600, and then in the bar until 2200.

A fair bar tab at the end of each week, but seeing as it was all charged back to the client.....

Well, to be fair when the season's in full swing then we get bombarded with football on pay tv platforms, that summer hiatus is blessed relief for those who don't like footy...and up to three matches a day for a good couple of weeks sends them over the edge. And yes, the WC is every four years but we get the Euros in-between so all the beleaguered folks get is one footy-free summer at a time.

The ladies then have the cheek to complain when we tell them to get in the kitchen and knock us up a nice snack to take their mind off the football. They are never happy Geoff, never happy!
