And what other services aside from the obvious are ultimately going to challenge it? The 101 streaming services set up by other studios are so late in coming that they're only ever going to be scrabbling for scraps, themselves trapped by the bounds of their own catalogue and IP. I totally get it that Disnee are an exception to this rule but that's because, as Lee said, Disnee are Disnee: they've always operated in their own orbit - hell, they created their own orbit by buying Pixar, Marvel, LFL and Fox - and so there'll always be room for a runner-up that offers content that Disnee can't/won't offer. Both companies are very shrewd with their pricing too, Netflix offering different tiers of access while the Mouse is keeping things low...for now. It's not a binary situation, people can more than afford to keep paying for the top two services while the others founder, or pick and choose what they want each month. As for loyalty, I've seen several people on this site alone say that they've dropped D+ after Mandalorian finished so it's not as cut and dried as "no-one ever leaves Disnee". Thus the a la carte model will even extend to the services themselves in future. |

I'm still amazed that they created a single UHD format without triggering another civil war, then again we've seen battle lines drawn when it comes to HDR, with some studios backing a rival dynamic metadata technology. Basically they just can't help themselves because they ALL want to have the lead on new tech and all the royalties that go with. And note that the 'digital bridge' personal copy idea for UHD has literally disappeared without trace, and just as streaming became mainstream. What a weird coincidence. I do not doubt that a load of streaming services are going to fall in the coming years as the market just won't be able to sustain every single one, but who are the content creators going to turn to to create one consolidated non-Disnee streaming option? Spend the time and money to create a 'Digital Media Association' or sell their stuff back to the big red N which will still have a huge market share and the infrastructure already in place to reach hundreds of millions of households worldwide? Hmmm. |

I've already suggested that individual efforts will fail again, due to over saturation. It's all about money, and all you are doing is losing money in the long run not concentrating everything in one service. As for infrastructure, well you can already download an app on any number of devices to access a service. |

You concentrate on the wrong aspects of streaming: movies versus TV shows. And you have totally ignored the end result of DTC (Direct To Consumer): gathering personal information . . . email address/age/location. Not once have you mentioned this. Quote:

Let's talk about Disney. I have received at least 4 emails between Thanksgiving and New Years Day offering me all kinds of stuff I can buy from them. If there's one company who knows the power/reward of merchandising, it's Disney.
Advertisers always ask . . . are we reaching our consumers? An ad plays but are people watching it? Or will they go to the bathroom or get a snack from the kitchen instead? On average I get an email a week from Disney+ telling me what's new or what's coming. And mixed into those kinds of emails I also got the "you can buy this stuff" emails too. I also get lots of emails from Roku offering me their devices on sale. |

although the Academy voters will be seeing the SDR version, I hope Erik (podcast at upper right presently - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...k#post18483890 ) receives an Oscar nomination for his cinematography in Mank.
