Well, with the recent news of the upcoming Bus Stop Blu-ray (https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Bus-Stop-Blu-ray/71880/ ), I would say that since the N.Y Restoration and Preservation house ( http://cineric.com/Cineric,%20Inc%20...eservation.htm ) in a complex, expensive restoration, had to combine various color separations in order to remedy the problem of significant vertical scratches in the blue channel of the original camera negative -

that classics lovers should hope that the processing of these separations (which included degraining, sharpening and regraining) was done in 4K in order to obtain the most optimal, precise result.

Keeping an eye on this thread. So far the new 4K mastered looks like Superbit all over again.

Apart from the ones with all new transfers, and more detail, different colour timing.

It would be much better than the present 2K DNR transfer we have. The HD DVD does look better though as it is the same transfer without the DNR.

Unfortunately, the HD DVD looks much better: http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleich...less=1#auswahl The BD has been contrast boosted, slightly zoomed, and contains a fair amount of DNR.

Most films are already shot in 4K (35mm). The problem is that most studios have primarily been using 2K digital intermediaries up until the last several years, which is of course half the resolution of 4K.

Not sure. You might want to email Paramount and see if a 4K DI was ever made. Of course, they could always do a new scan of the original elements and make a 4K master.

I disagree, the HD DVD has it's own set of issues. The BD has problems too, but it's not a slam dunk to say the HD DVD is "better". Just "different".

Also the differing amount of picture information and color values would leave me to think it's an entirely different transfer.

Well, you can just disagree away then.

Yeah, I'd say it's a different transfer entirely. The HD DVD isn't perfect, but I greatly prefer it over the Blu-ray, so much so that I made my own BD using the demuxed HD DVD.

If a movie is heavy on visual effects, you can pretty safely put down money on a 2K finish (including Iron Man). The exceptions are few.

I should have clarified that I was talking about vertical resolution.
