As it says on the list "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (MGM & Criterion) (8K scan)"

Just out of interest were did we get that:

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Dazed and Confused

Had a 4k scan for their discs?
Because for Indy I knew the exact opposite

That's somewhere in this thread.
There was a long debate i remember about the Indy films, but finally someone posted some info on that.
Dazed i can't remember but it would not have gotten on the list if not for some info on that.

Thats what I thought the list had rules, but LP scanned the Indy films at 2k only Raiders was redone at 4k.
If Dazed looks like a 4k master I will eat my many hats

The back cover of Dazed says that it comes from a high definition master, probably meaning 1080p, because it doesn't mention 4K. I think it should be removed from the list.

If I remember correctly, The Temple Of Doom & The Last Crusade were both scanned at 4K but didn't get the same extensive restoration as Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

1. The booklet mentions 4K. There's a couple of other Criterion releases that come from 4K scan/master but only mention 1080p in the specs. They didn't start listing 4K masters until recently when 4K became market ploy.
2. 4K is just a resolution. It is not an alien technology that makes everything hyperdetailed and clear. It all depends on the source material and effor put into the whole mastering process.
3. If it indeed comes from 4K scan then it is an early one because the DVD released in 2006 comes from the same master and also mentions 4K in the booklet.

Seems like the definition of "4K" can be stretched more than the loopholes found by Johnnie Cochran in his prime, which is why many are defending the new Rocky release..

Apparently, the source doesn't mean a damn thing, as long as it is scanned in 4K. I wonder if you take a laserdisc and print out every single frame of the laserdisc on a paper and then scan all those papers in 4K, would that count as a 4K scan?

What's wrong with it is that if it indeed is "4K" as MGM led us to believe, then it must be a 4K scan that stretches the definition of what 4K is, which I was sarcastically addressing in my initial post.

I just love how people who don't make scans or are involved with the transfer and mastering of films are SO SURE what exactly a 4K scan "should" look like, and that those rules apply for every film done in the process (never mind the different filmstocks, techniques used, etc).

I don't see the ambiguity there. If your 4K scan is a good way off from even making good use of blu-ray's 1080p (and there's no reason to suspect the movie has preservation issues that would prevent that), you're doing something wrong.

I recently learned that Sony mastered The Smurfs 2 in 4K, though it was not on traditional film.

Sorry for the potentially stupid question, but to all you folks who actually have some of these 4k + rescanned or remastered blu-rays, what benefits do you actually see that are a consequence of the higher resolution?

Bearing in mind the blu-ray cntent is only 1080, and your blu-ray player can only read and output 1080, what is the benefit of a 4k transfer?

thanks.

I think MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL should be on this list if it already isn't.

The Sony 4k remastered line of blurays have a slightly higher bitrate and expanded color space on equipment that supports the xvYCC color space.
