I could be wrong, but I am going to guess they were not done in 4K only because it was never mentioned in the restoration documentaries or articles I've seen on them. My guess is it would have been mentioned.

I saw a post as I was searching around the website looking at the 4K transition. It will be actually better than the DVD to Blu Ray transition as studios are using 4K and occasionally 6K camera heads. Red for example offers various models at 4K so when you go grab that release you've been waiting for you are actually getting a scaled-down version of the movie if shot on 4K bodies. Since even the most basic movies have at least a few VFX shots, it will be easier, cheaper and faster to transfer the original 4K source to a 4K Blu-ray (or whatever the may end up calling it.)
As most high budget movies are VFX ridden, the studios are putting in place a 4K pipeline though what stops it and actually makes it more expensive on the consumer end is the down sampling of 4K source to <2K output, i.e.: 1920 x 1080 Blu-ray. There are even 6K camera heads being developed (for this I would look at Wiki or use your search engine). So you are actually getting a downgraded movie if they have shot on 4K (you can tell by looking at the aspect ratio on the back of the box: 2.35:1 is film (yes there have been 2.55:1 epics from the 50's) and if you see 2.40:1 it has most likely been shot digitally on a 4K head as 2.40:1 is usually an indicator for 4K source - look at 4K cinematographic equipment manufacturer websites at the specs on the bodies). So when the 4K consumer prices come down for Ultra HD (4K) screens and players and the online delivery industry figures out what to do with how to deliver a multi-hundred gigabyte movie to your home, you will finally see what digital cinematography is all about. As film is unfortunately near the end of it life (I am actually saddened by this as though the wow factor of 4 to 6K source and seeing it on a 4K screen), film will always hold the highest place in the history of cinema as the BEST source material one can put a movie onto - IMHO). So in the end, when DVDs finally die and you are now faced with the new 'standard definition' blu-ray or an 'HD' 4K version, which will you choose? How much will a 4K movie cost on optical media. What about 4K 3D? $70.00 for a 3D version of a favorite? And what about the movie theaters that already show 4K movies in-house? Film projection is almost gone for major houses (sad but change happens). Though I am somewhat caffeinated and a little over the place, my final thought is this: This will be one of the most important transitions in home video (IMHO more so than VHS to DVD), so the industry should be careful about the upcoming transfer concerning pricing, online services (most likely NOT going to be happy until about 2050), and price-performance for the consumer. I thank you for your time. |
