I'd love to see a screenshot comparison between the 4K download and the JP Blu-ray.

No confirmation as of yet, but I'd expect a constant 1.90:1 AR for the IMAX 3D version.

That's funny, I just checked those JW specs on IMDB before clicking on this thread. I could've sworn that they said they were shooting partially on IMAX, but clearly that's not the case. It's a bit of a mishmash, what with 35mm, 5-perf 65mm, and RED in 5K and 6K.

VERY pleased to see it's getting a 4K finish though, I think that's a first for any simultaneous 2D/3D finish outside of a Sony release. (Though the 3D version may still end up as a 2K deliverable.)

If portions were shot 70MM and anamorphic 35MM then the IMAX version would be cropped.

If we go according to the details on imdb, 35mm wasn't filmed anamorphic.

But this was shot over so many camera systems, we won't know exactly if the IMAX version is cropped or opened up. My money's in cropped though.

Well, the first three were 1.85:1.

I just look at YouTube clips, and they all looked like they're about 1.90:1.

Here we go: they opted for the univisium ratio, 2.00:1.

Ironic how the film's cinematographer professes his love of anamorphic here:

Ah, I thought there was something off about the ratio in the clips, being clearly wider than 1.85 but not enough for 2.35, that's why I checked the specs (about the same time that everyone else did, clearly! ). The RED Dragon shoots raw 6K at 2:1, 65mm will give 2.20, 4-perf Super 35 will give a nice tall negative, this movie's all over the place photographically.

Storaro's probably dancing a jig right about now. Don't get me wrongo, I don't mind 2:1 if it's composed for that (as Trevorrow said, it's damned close to the 1.90 IMAX digital ratio) but cropping 2.35 movies to get there is NOT cool, Vittorio. Not cool.

Not ironic. Just maybe the details on imdb aren't accurate. I'm not surprised.

But thanks for the article!

I should think the specs are correct, they're using flat format(s) as opposed to anamorphic in order to give the captured image a nice balance between height and width (as Peter said, there's no going back with anamorphic, it's widescreen or bust with that format).

The specs suggest it'll be matted to 2.35 for regular DCPs though, so it'll probably be a typical IMAX joint: looks okay in the action scenes but with too much headroom in the talky bits. That's what I hate about all these modern multi-aspect shows: effective composition is taking a back seat to filling da screen.
