In the "Hombre" thread apparently a poster states Twilight Time confirms that Fox issued a brand new 4K Master to them for that release.
Also on there Facebook page they confirmed that A Man of All Seasons is a new 4K scan from Sony. |

Why not? The ap is the same width as for 4-perf S35 (and is wider than anamorphic or flat 1.85 which both use the Academy ap offset for the soundtrack), and after all, it's the width that the the 4K resolution component is referring to. 2-perf shows (past and present) also scrub up nicely in 4K.

Already you're cutting off part of the frame for 3-perf. Just like a letterboxed 2.39 BD isn't technically 1920x1080. The bars chop that down somewhat. So it might look nice in 4K, but it isn't 4K. |

Oh, you mean the vertical resolution won't get near 2160p? Fair enough, but by that same rationale the same should apply to a 4-perf S35 show matted down to 2.35 (which would use even less negative area than a 1.85 3-perf S35 movie, no?) and even flat 1.85, because all of those are losing real estate on the negative from what's exposed to what's actually projected.
Seeing as no flat format is actually meant to project the entire "full-frame" 4-perf 35mm ap then mentioning that is a bit disingenuous, and as for anamorphic, it's using more height of the negative for sure, but that advantage is negated somewhat by the inherent distortion and other foibles of the anamorphic glass. I LOVE anamorphic, don't get me wrongo, but I know of a veteran VFX supervisor who greatly prefers S35 for its sheer sharpness. |
