Dude there's simply no possible way they can make 100 zones compete with 650 zones. Theres a massive physical limitation difference there that software just can't overcome. Some of you are way too deep in the Sony processing kool-aid.

How about we let a pro count the actual zones on a release set.
And then decide.

I suppose it depends on exactly what one means by the term professional, but I do regard digitalfernsehen as professional (or at least professional-class).

My big worry now is this (and I think Ray or someone else here already mentioned it, but I can't find the original post): Sony might be close to washing its hands of locally dimmed LCDs because it now has OLEDs to offer for its prosumer-level displays, and that'll be a disaster if it happens. They own the technology to individually modulated LED backlighting, which is what Backlight Master Drive really is. Therefore, if in 2019 they abandon it and bury the patented technology, then the Z9Ds, for whatever warts they have, are the first and only consumer-available LCDs with individually modulated LED backlights. To me that means the single greatest invention ever for LCD backlighting will be dead and buried after the last Z9D is sold.

I'm actually thinking very hard about buying a remaining Z9D now.

The 104 zone count comes from one of the most respected professional sources in the industry, FYI. That's why it's being taken so seriously.

Two thing that I noticed in comparing the specs between the Z9D and the Z9F - the Z9F weighs less but it also uses substantially more power. Given the chipset update which should use less power, that means the screen illumination should be substantially higher. Again when the Z9F undergoes a rigorous test we will get an accurate picture of its capabilities.

All I know right now, is if the price for the 75" Z9D comes down from $7,000 in USA to 5K or under, I'll likely get one to replace my 65" Z9D.

See this is a sentiment I don't understand. At this point, it seems quite clear which set you should be looking into. The Z9D is confirmed to be awesome. Later builds are also always better than early builds. I don't know why people have a thing against buying a model from last year. Besides the fact that they want to tell everyone they just bought a 2018 television.

I've love to be in a position where I needed to buy a new TV right now and I could be trying to acquire a 65" Z9D for around $2500. Day old bread prices on brand new TVs are awesome.

Nothing is clear until we get a better idea as to what the Z9F's strengths and weaknesses are. And I probably phrased that wrong anyway... the Z9D is not out of the question for me. If the Z9F comes out and it proves to really be a disappointment then I'm going with the Z9D, most likely.

Z9D for $2500 would be great.

But if Z9F proves worthy and can be brought for $2500-$2999 on an appropriately timed sale... that would be AWESOME. Especially with its wide viewing angles. And looks close to a $30,000 monitor's PQ(?).

2 year old TV. $2500 should be its price for LCD.

No, I missed the part where you explained why you think a set that is going to be for sale in a couple of weeks is going to dramatically change from what's being currently shown.

I think at this point, OLEDs are the way to go. That LG C8 is amazing.

Not at all dvdmike. I used to have an A1E and upgraded to C8. Huge Sony fan here BTW. The new A9F sounds very promising. But I think the future is OLED. Much more cinematic and blacks to die for.

I doubt it. OLED still cant quite get the HDR thing too right and ABL is kind of a concerning compromise to make. When micro LED comes along it’ll probably take over.

As a film fan, I’m not worried about having the highest nit rating. OLED is sublime in everything else.

Micro LED looks very promising. I wouldn't be suprised if Sony is just phasing out their LED line and the Z9F is just a patchwork segue product until they launch.

I’m still holding out for more substantial reviews and measurements on units out in the ‘wild’ before making a final judgment, but up until now that’s how it feels with this model. Wouldn’t surprise me if it turns out that next year they announce a miniLED model, or like you said, maybe even a microLED one as the new flagship.

I also don't think that pure nit numbers alone can judge the impressive nature of OLED's visuals considering the contrast they're able to produce with true blacks, but that said, there's other trade offs. Games look great with the brighter flavor of HDR. OLED's also can suffer from vertical banding. The motion on OLED's are more stuttery unless you want to apply some built in algorithm to make it appear less so. And because OLED's are so careful to make sure you don't screw something up, they have ABL, which will change the image on the fly if the processing deems it necessary for the health of the TV.

LCD on the other hand, while it has its own set of issues due to FALD and how it works, doesn't have to worry about any of that stuff. You can get damn impressive black levels in 2018 AND great, bright HDR (and even accurate HDR depending on the model) with virtually none of the 'treat it well or it'll cause screen issues' concerns.

Micro LED will be the perfect middle ground that should be able to deliver the best of both worlds.
