PTA + RDJ + Pinocchio = Something I never thought I'd see happen, but have to now that it's been mentioned.

One of the prevailing themes in Anderson's works is that of the father figure, and a primary focus of the Pinocchio story is the relationship between Geppetto and Pinocchio. In the Disney version, Geppetto goes on a journey to rescue his son, who is all he has in the world.

So I can see why someone like PTA would be drawn to a Pinocchio film. Or maybe it is as simple as wanting to work with RDJr., who has been attached to this Pinocchio movie for a while.

Honestly, I wish Disney were doing a live action Pinocchio as it's among my favorite Disney films, but a PTA/RDJr Pinocchio film - potentially darker than it would be at Disney, though still PG-13 most likely - is very intriguing.

I bet Geppetto will have been abusing Pinocchio ever since he came to life in this version or something similar.

Ah, that running theme that PTA has in all his films...child abuse?

It's a Tim Burton film. Tim Burton is all about the dark.

Look at the news a page back. Paul Thomas Anderson is writing a draft and is rumoured to direct now, PTA is mentioned in the post you quoted.

Well it fits the trope of Burton's protagonists having father issues.

Isn't Burton already fairly busy with Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, the live-action Dumbo film and the rumoured Beetlejuice sequel? I'm having a hard time seeing him squeezing this into that already packed schedule...

PTA has made two great things in his career, There Will Be Blood and some of the music videos for the last in my avatar. The rest has been very mediocre in my view. Hopefully he doesn't direct.

Pretty sure Burton is tied up with the live-action Dumbo movie. Although frankly he's a better fit for Pinocchio. Not that either movie needs to be made by anyone.

I don't like all of his films, but one thing he's never made is a mediocre film.

Iron Man's Robert Downey Jr. has been attached to the film for a while, and with him, Warner Bros. has been quick to switch directors. The team was originally eyeing Tim Burton to direct, though both Ben Stiller and Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood) have also been named.

Pinnochio has had its fair share of writers as well, with Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, X-Men: Days of Future Past), Michael Mitnick (The Giver), and Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) all having a go at the script. No word on who is actually set to pen the script at this time.

Those involved have been quiet on the story details, though according to Tracking Board, the film will follow Geppetto as he sets out to search for the missing Pinocchio.
