Not that this initiative will affect experienced Blu-ray.com members (and, for that matter, Value Electronics clients after reading Robert’s post above, whose establishment deserves the accolades) who have been already setting up their displays properly for years, but what’s disappointing is that the UHD ‘Alliance’ couldn’t get all the major consumer TV manufacturers to get onboard at the same time for something as simple as this from the get-go.

Also, there seems to be a difference of opinion among bloggers as to what Joe6P naturally likes or does not like/prefer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMBsxg1hVls#t=5m9s
and I don’t know of any reputable studies involving naïve (as opposed to expert, e.g. - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4533889/) observers that have proven one way or another their video preferences….just anecdotal evidence.

Calling on Vincent T to do another single blinded study, but this time pulling random people off the street in Manchester? to look at both modes and determine what they truly like without any hints as to which is more authentic to the creative intent and if Phil Hinton (in the linked youtube) is correct, then I don’t think that offering filmmaker mode will be enough to drive compliance to creative intent, there will need to be a vigorous education campaign at the grass roots level too.

Filmmaker Mode to me sounds like this ...

It sure is a winner if implemented right to all/most home consumer's displays.
It's like a film art school @ the press of a single remote's button.
The idea is wonderful, 4K HDR is in need of that feature; we'll have to see the display manufacturers contributions and implementations with the Hollywood filmmakers' participation @ the service of home cinema consumption.

We're back on the right track; and this is the black and white Hollywood Filmmaker Mode version (the positive way I see it) ...

ASIDE: Please can someone in the know document the differences between this new "FilmMaker mode", and the existing "Netflix mode"?

I was under the impression that BOTH have the same aim - turn off all the crap, and give us "creators' intent". So surely then, we don't need two competing "ours is the creators' intent" movements? That will be a seriously bad thing for consumers and might dilute the message.

I did note with a wry smile that Christopher Nolan said it was a mode aimed at promoting Film (celluloid). Strangely that's not what everyone else said! It's about accuracy and preserving his intent, regardless of what medium was used in the creation surely.

No there is no difference between filmmaker mode and Netflix calibrated mode or movie mode. The only difference is that Netflix calibrated mode can only be used if you’re using Netflix app

It is strange since Samsung, Sony, TCL and others are members of the Alliance. Make one wonder why they are absent from the list.

Unless the manufacturers follow through and ensure the "Filmmaker Mode" is calibrated properly from the factory then really what does this change outside of the name? Factory calibration from most manufacturers seems very inconsistent with regards to accuracy. The average Joe likely doesn't even bother to change the picture settings to begin with, thus the effort would be for naught.

I think a better way to ensure more accurate viewing in general is to limit it to something like 3 modes, Vivid, Game & Accurate. Then you set all displays to Accurate mode from the factory so that even people who don't change anything get the most accurate picture out of the box. Over time you might see more people getting used to and preferring a more accurate picture, if only because they're used to it. But again this all comes down to manufacturers being willing to pony up the time and effort to ensure more accurate factory calibration in general.

The only time I see 'soap opera mode' is when I see a Samsung.

There is no such thing as true calibration when done at the factory unless they do it on every single panel individually and they know what is the exacting lighting condition where the buyer is going to watch the display in. Even if they know all the conditions if your viewing area, they still need to compensate for your player, the receiver you use (or not) etc, There is still no way any manufacturer will spend 2 hours to calibrate each TV coming out of the factory.

Samsung invented and pushed HDR10+ so I'm not surprised.

Sony's probably figuring out how to implement it in firmware on their current flagships.

Note to Jonathan, to your probing query, the Colorimetry Research CR-300 Spectral Radiometer –

would work well for your needs.

Indeed, it is my favorite city (additionally, outside town for instance, the amenities of the BC province in general can't be beat, e.g. https://www.bcbikerace.com/# ), but hey Burbank’s got Matrix red and blue pill cookies - https://1428elm.com/2019/08/27/the-m...hris-kukshtel/

so SoCal’s got that going for it…..but where was the milk? And I always wondered if he didn't take either and just drank the water.

If that’s the case, then let us not forget when/where the organized awareness campaign first all began….with a DP - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...d#post11691918

and if one scrolls down to the bottom of the outside link in that ^ post, one will see that the petition was started years ago and the first filmmaker (as in the one who actually captures the images for the Directors be it in whatever parameter) to sign/comment was Claudio

My understanding is Filmmode Mode is independent of any HDR (HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision). IOW, with Filmmode Mode engaged any HDR will continue to function.

Hope Kris Deering, Stacey Spears and other pros weigh in with their views.
