I'm in the market for a Blu Ray player. I was wondering if anybody had an idea of the best deal for a Blu Ray player in terms of price and/or sound/picure quality. I've heard good things about the Sony player and bad things about the cheaper Samsung player and some of the other models. I don't know much about the player in the PS3 because I hate PS3 but I'd be willing to get it if it's the better deal in terms of it's Blu Ray playback capabilities and because it's relatively cheap and I'm on a modest budget. Any suggestion??

sorry to hear you don't like the ps3, however for the money it continues to be one of the top players on th market
if you just want to go standalone, the original samsung bd-p1000 is not a bad player. however, with some of the newer players coming out you'd prob be better off with one of those. possibly hold off and wait for the second gen sony |

The issue you are talking about is some people that have old HDTV displays without scalars might need to play some 720P games at 480P quality since their display can not handle native 720P. Most BLU-RAY games and movies on PS3 are 1080P and the PS3 will output the signal at 1080P or 1080I. 1080I signals are supported by most old HDTV displays. |

I also recently purchased a Samsung BD-P1200. I have experience the "can't play this disc" a couple of times for Blu-Ray discs that the system has already played (brand new discs). I was wondering how you knew about the Firmware update. When I go to the Samsung site, the only firmware update they list is for the BD-P1000. Overall I really like the Samsung BD-P1200. Super picture on Blu-Ray discs and a great up-convert on regular DVDs. I am glad I didn't wait. This system fits my needs for clear defined pictures.

I highly recommend the PS3 even if you never play a game on it. I've had mine for a couple of weeks now and love it.
It's a tremendous BD player that also gives you many more options that are mentioned in other posts here. It's fast. Playback is beautiful. Sound is awesome. I don't know what else to say. |

I am waiting for the Pansonic DMP 50. As soon as it is available my PS3 is going on Ebay.

Hands down... Samsung BD-P1200
You want 1080p at 24fps. You want one of the better prices. Get this. The problem is that you still won't get all of the future capabilities of BR with it. If the PS3 did 24fps, I'd recommend that. Some day, maybe it will. I have my doubts, though. Last edited by Greenmatiz2; 05-13-2007 at 10:07 AM. |

I have a PS3 connected to a pioneer elite reciever that processes hdmi sound output. I can set the movies I watch to uncompressed audio, and it is frikin awesome. The PS3 is a home entertainment unit, not just a video game machine.

It turns out that 1080/24 isn't always advertised on the blu box. I purchased Blade Runner the other day and was blown away by the PQ. But then I'm watching it on a 52" XBR5. In short, the ONLY reason I'd change my BD player right now is to get DTA HDMA. And then I'd also need to match the PS3s Ethernet firmware updating and profile 2.0 capability that's soon to come. But given what else the PS3 can do this is without doubt, question, the best value for money out there. Don't forget you can now get the 40GB version for a stunning price given Sonys dedication to the unit. This is a player that will be guaranteed future proofing updates. |

ahahahhahah he didnt say the WORST player ever. as someone who never ventured into the PS3 game and wanted a standalone, I would have to say learning from my obvious mistakes, to go with the Panasonic BD50 that is coming out OR the new Sony players. No samsung BD players for me ever again.... Last edited by redlikefire02; 02-26-2008 at 08:36 PM. |

If you want analog outs, Dolby True HD and upconversion for regular DVDs, then I think you'll like the Panasonic player. Although it is a bit pricey.
