On balance, in terms of error rate, I view thee author on HDD as no worse than any other writer/editor assigned to regularly contribute to the typical AV consumer website/forums in order to generate discussion. I just finished reading an article posted on another thread from a *challenged* writer for PCMag having difficulty “dealing” with HDR.

What’s a little perplexing to me though is that in reviewing Michael’s bio…..http://www.highdefdigest.com/author/...-s-palmer.html , granted although not being on quite the same level as working in the prestigious Capra Building, he doesn’t at least mention the time during his formative years in which he spent on the Sony Pictures lot, specifically.

Not to worry , at any age, I’ve always admired intelligence, maturity and work ethic far over that of the ability to repeatedly spend money for one’s self-gratification….which, when you really think about it, by itself, is not much of an accomplishment anyway.

I think I have what is a respectable collection of Blu-rays along with different displays to play them on, bicycles from different eras, and more recently, motorcycles and paintings (modest value), but I don't brag about them or even much list them, except perhaps in a passing comment….they’re just *things* that professional success, the grace of God, the patience of my wife and a little luck has enabled me to aggregate.

The UHD Alliance has posted their requirements for certification. The color gamut has to be over 90% of DCI P3 and have a peak brightness of 1000 nits for LCD displays or 540 nits for OLED displays.

All good and well (except perhaps for independent calibrators who need more detail) with the presentation itemizing to the press the specs in order to achieve the Premium logo; however, I think getting an unequivocal, definitive answer to one simple question asked to Hanno (who being well versed in the mandatory open HDR standard for Ultra HD Blu-ray) and Mahesh Balakrishnan, of Dolby (although he was not on the panel, he was well seen in attendance during the discussion) would have been of equal or more practical value to users.

Simply, what most consumers might really appreciate in knowing for certain, rather than speculating about it is whether a Dolby Vision movie can play back HDR10 on a non-Dolby Vision TV (having only HDR10 as solution). I’ve read many posts on this forum where the presumption by members is that they will not.

So anyway, now that the Premium specs milestone has been achieved, one might ask, what’s up next on the Standards front? but now working in a comparatively more complex scenario, how to go from the camera all the way thru to the consumer TV?

Well, current work be centered on investigating and achieving a consistent HDR image on a monitor by using an OOTF framework for incorporating the PQ transfer function and the hybrid log gamma solution for the EIDR (aka HDR] standard for broadcast (given its live nature) this year with hopefully some documented progress made next month.

As to those perhaps now melancholy Vizio fans who’d been planning a Vizio Reference RS65, please don’t fret a tear because though those TVs be down a little on the nits in order to qualify for the Premium logo, the fact that they have Dolby Vision (dynamic metadata) should definitely help compensate for the lack (~200 nits) of peak brightness for the final image of Dolby movies played back on your TVs.

I thought the UHD Blu iteration of Dolby Vision uses an HDR10 base layer anyway? Or do you mean the Dolby Vision rollout across all delivery formats (which may use different layer options or may even be the single layer solution)?
