You should see Glory.....it is absolutely stunning, especially compared to the original release.

No because my Insignia player won't play Twilight Time titles. Further more that player has it's own list of problems of select titles that freeze as well. Prior to these players I owned a samsung and a pioneer as well that had problems with certain titles. Ranging from Avatar to Sherlock Holmes to Ice Age 3. Firmware issues and so forth. Just about ever player out there tends to run into one problem or another. You just hope that these companies are on top of there firmware.

I have a first-gen Magnavox, and it plays everything. The only movie that gave me problems was the second version of Good Will Hunting. The first time that I tried to play the movie, it took about 10-15 minutes for the movie to load. However, in subsequent playings, the BD Live software remembers where I stopped and asks if I want to resume. So, no more problems.

The present BD of Bridge on the River Kwai was already mastered in 4K.

I have a pretty sub par computer/monitor but even I can see quite a large boost/

Not only is the grain stricture more refined and natural with a little black spec on the print also being digitally removed on the MI4K version, but fine detail especially on the right side of Smith's face is noticeably better. The image overall is just more filmitic/organic and is sharper, but even still the old Blu-Ray still looks decent.

I think the OP should be revised to include a list where readers are told up front which Mi4K titles are worth the upgrade.

For example:

The Amazing Spider-Man = no
Angels and Demons = yes
Battle LA = no
Ghostbusters = yes
Glory = yes
Godzilla = yes
The Karate Kid = no
Men in Black = yes
Moneyball = yes
The Other Guys = no
Pineapple Express = no
Spider-Man = yes
Spider-Man = YMMV (framing is significantly different)
Taxi Driver = no
Total Recall = no

That's a great idea. I would also include a link to a caps-a-holic comparsen (assuming one exists) of the orignal Blu-Ray vs the MI4K Blu-Ray, especially for those that are worthy upgrades so the reader can get an even better idea of just how much better said MI4K version is in terms of PQ.

For example since we are talking Men in Black - http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...ID=273#auswahl

Spider-Man 2 should be listed as a definite 'yes' with a 'YMMV' note added in addition. The transfer look so much better than the original transfer -- it's a significant improvement.

From a technical standpoint, it may be "better", but the change in framing is befuddling.

I know that some people are going to mention the Super 35 thing again, but the 2.40:1 frame is selected before the movie undergoes DI. The 2.40:1 frame is not always the middle of the image. It can be high, middle, low, or even a zoomed portion of the image.

So...unless Sony scanned the ENTIRE Super 35 image for this 4K transfer, there was no reason for the framing to have been changed for the Mi4K BD.

Personally I also think it's misframed in the new transfer.

The right side of the screen seems to have elements that don't belong there.

Look at Uncle Ben's head. You can literally see the additionally exposed area is not supposed to be shown.

This shot of the train was apparently rendered at 2.40, so there was no framing room to adjust, so they just zoomed/cropped it:

Perhaps the actual 4K release will get this movie perfect.

I don't see much of a difference to be honest.

Pineapple Express is worthy too. Colours are much better and it doesn't look as soft as the original:

People should use that list as a guide. Its really up to the individual to decide whether its worth purchasing/double dipping.

I welcome these re-releases (most of them ) and I hope Sony will announce a next wave.

Okay, forget about the Super 35 'excuse', here's the bottom line: the framing we see, whether in the cinema or on home video, rarely represents every last pixel of the finished output. I've lost count of the amount of times that framing has been altered from one transfer to another - heck, even the same master from DI across different media can result in surprising differences. My point is that shit happens, and I honestly don't get why it's such a big deal in this case.

To qualify that remark, let me say again that Spidey 2 always looked unbalanced to me on the old Blu-ray, never mind the new one, but the extra headroom and space on the right (the goof in the shot of Uncle Ben is a single anomaly in that regard, it's disingenous to claim otherwise) must have come from somewhere. In fact, if you look at this old AVS thread (Xylon, we salute you) you can see that the DVD of Spidey 2 has more image on the right and more headroom, it's also not as contrasty and loses the magenta tinge. Hmmm, that sounds familiar...

The movie was finished on a 4K DI, but the framing and grading of Spidey 2 has changed from version to version over the years (the HDTV version was open matte 1.78 IIRC). This latest transfer is merely another iteration, one that I happen to like very much.

So it's a 'Yes' from me in the improvement column.

Showing a little more or removing a little bit at the top and bottom is not the same as shifting the framing altogether.
