I understand totally, and thanks for the well written reply. It is not about a misunderstanding of the technology. It's that we need one format at home and Dolby are late out if the gate and unsupported, Dolby provide support to be able to licence the tech out, its all about money. They are less messed up than the Phillips version, but why do we need 3 versions? The standard version is fine and more ready supported |

Hell if it is, it’s a brand new cinematic ecosystem -
![]() which more accurately delivers what cameras have been capturing for years. Sure, if your personal sentiment is to prefer to have it later dumbed down for artistic purposes, that’s your prerogative, but let’s give Directors and Cinematographers the choice of at least being able to start with the least constricted imagery in post compared to in the past. |

Even if you dislike HDR wouldn't dynamic metadata be better than static metadata for converting HDR to SDR? Last edited by Richard Paul; 03-02-2016 at 02:28 AM. |

mike, when we’re discussing serious material topic, this thread is about knowledgeable
![]() If you want to fairly knock Dolby Vision in some fashion, then yes, I’ll admit that Dolby Cinemas are not perfect….for if a movie isn’t mastered in Dolby Vision but still projected with the Dolby Vision projection system, like many movies currently are at AMC Dolby Cinemas, it can reveal more artifacts (not that a typical theatergoer would probably ever notice), as there are still some post houses which grade with projection systems coming in ~ 2,000:1 contrast ratio which is not ideal for later display by *super charged* Dolby projection systems. As far as entertainment *PR*, in terms of resolution, you could likewise have knocked many theaters worldwide with Sony 4K projection systems configured like so whether or not they were projecting 3D…..or “4K” 2D movies - ![]() |

mike, perhaps you forgot thee ‘M’ at the end of ‘PR’ because you’ve never experimented in the DYN operational mode as explained over 2 years ago with regards to colorists pioneering

Hi guys
I'm sorry to disturb this thread, I'm way, way over my head here, but Viking posted something here days ago and I wanted to comment on it. Do you remember the Sony press release listing future catalogue titles that Viking posted here? The usual suspects. Well, nobody has mentioned this but "Taxi driver" was in the list. That's a Martin Scorsese movie. We all know what an activist he is on film heritage, preservation, and all that stuff. He's quite a vocal guy too. He's alive, he's not David Lean. Do you believe Sony will release "Taxi driver" with HDR? If they do, would that mean Scorsese believes HDR is a tool that can be used right? (would this change anyone's stance against HDR?) If they don't, it will surely mean there will be a line of non-HDR titles released, to everyone's (around here) delight? (considering how panicked some seem to be about HDR-mania and what studios will do) Could this mark some sort of political divide on when to and when not to? |

They released Goodfellas in Dolby Vision via UHD VUDU, so he can't be that opposed to it. But right now there is a VERY limited amount of displays that can even take advantage of DV so you'd be hard pressed to find comments on it.
