If you view it on an SDR (non-HDR) screen you will actually look at an HDR > SDR conversion that YouTube creates automatically.

It took a couple of days to set up a workflow for processing and uploading HDR videos for YouTube. Their HDR implementation is atrocious because they rely on custom command line tools to attach HDR metadata to exported video. It's a total mess. And it's their fault because they do not support the actual standard as input (HEVC/H.265 with embedded HDR metadata).

Subscribe to the channel if you want to get notified of new videos as I post them in the next few days.

I'm a little confused by YouTube hdr, maybe in simple terms you can help.

But is YT hdr a new brand of hdr by YouTube, or is it the regular hdr10? Do you grade using YouTube tools or your own programs?

In the end Chromecast Ultra outputs HDR10. The internal codec is not HEVC/H.265, but the end result is the same.

I color grade with DaVinci Resolve (only the paid Studio version has proper HDR support). Then I output in DNxHR HQX, then convert to H.264 10bit, then add HDR Metadata in an MKV container. Finally after upload they again transcode to something like VP9. It's a mess really, since probably Google does not want to pay the HEVC royalties.

I’ll tell you something about John’s character . When I was a young teenager, a nobody in the points race, the electronic ignition on my Penton went kaput 3 days before my first National enduro. Understand, these are sealed units and a rider can’t fix them, worse, for me, no shop in the tri-state area even had them in stock. I called up Penton motorcycles out of the blue in desperation.

John personally picked up the phone, listened to my dilemma and without further ado sent out a brand new ignition to me next-day air, free of charge (mind you ignition units are not cheap). Thoughtfulness and support like that is no wonder why a lot of folks traveled from afar to make the west coast movie premiere of Penton:The John Penton Story at The Egyptian Theater in Hollywood in order to honor the man….http://www.cycleworld.com/2014/06/19...d-movie-review

That's kinda the point I think: IF the display can properly handle HDR10 then the lack of dynamic metadata isn't a huge concern, and never has been for such well-equipped folks. It's with the OLEDs and 'HDR lite' sets of the world (not to mention us poor old SDR boys!) whereupon the lack of scene-based changes really starts to hinder the presentation.

BUT naturally this will be levelled out in time as the HDR lite/SDR sets diminish and LG finally get a grip on their HDR10 processing implementation (already begun with a recent firmware update, I think?) so by the time dynamic metadata becomes a thing it may find itself as a solution without a problem. And HLG doesn't even need metadata in the same way, as the display applies the appropriate rendering intent.
