Anyway, lots of Monday morning quarterbacking throughout all internet AV forums/message boards and pity is, they know/appreciate as much for example about the next significant next-gen UHD parameter as they did about the pathway to HDR in 2014 - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ar#post9754213 , which was close to nothing. Hypocrisy abounds, e.g. you have this one post prod consultant on the internet who, back in the day, was the biggest HDR basher I can think of (posting about burned retinas, the lack of value of HDR (i.e. another ‘gimmick’), you know the whole anti-HDR shebang) and nowwwww he’s a prolific promoter of the format because it’s become more fashionable to discuss it positively on the forums. |

FWIW, I wouldn't consider this movie as high-brow as those on your list.

Note to PaulGo ![]() ![]() Anyway, as to the answer I’m looking for, all readers should think of a movie that really leverages the potential/capability of HDR (and succeeds!), the screening of which was invitation only to a small select group in a more intimate setting. |

That's what any DC mode is at heart, BUT people say that it enables dynamic tone mapping on the LG OLEDs so it's not to be dismissed out of hand in that instance. I've tried it out on the ZD9 (which ignores metadata anyway) but any benefits you get are cancelled out by the backlight jumping up and down on every scene change.

I am going to try new cables. I get the HDR logo popping up and everything seems in order but I don't notice a difference picture wise. Example. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is supposed to have a new colour grade on 4k where it's more red and orange tints vs the blue tint on the Blu ray but when I compare between Blu-ray and 4k there is no colour difference. I do see a slight improvement in sharpness but nothing special with the colours. I even did a screen grab on my tv from both sources and flipped back and forth and noticed zero difference colour wise

We all know that Samsung and Panasonic made this to compete with Dolby Vision. And since it's free to use, will other manufacturers, like Sony, use it with their middle range TVs (that don't support DV)?
Wouldn't Sony's middle range be inferior to Samsung's because it doesn't have an HDR with dynamic metadata? Last edited by AccenT; 01-02-2018 at 02:52 PM. |
