I gotta say, I just don't see it.
Older people are not going to flock to see captain America, Spider-Man or avengers are they? You are getting too tied up with the cinema thing. Why aren't they watching on the big screen at home?

Who says they're not?

Do you know anybody who does all of their movie watching on a smartphone?

And what constitutes a big screen?

As I've mentioned before, I used to have a 12 inch black-and-white portable in my room when I was a kid. I maybe had a 19 inch screen in my first several apartments.

My nieces today have a 32 inch HDTV in their bedroom and their 'small' screen viewing is on 12-17 inch HD screens. And then there's the 50 inch HD set in their family room.

Their 'small screens' are almost as big as our normal sized tvs were and their big screens are far bigger.

Yes, I know several people who watch all their content on their smartphone.

A big screen to me is something I am comfortable watching. So in my case 46 inch and above. I don't want to be squinting at some compression riddled stream on a smartphone or smartwatch.

By the way I am in my 30's so not old.

Fifty years ago the WWII generation thought television would be the downfall of western civilization. Children raised on television wouldn't read. They wouldn't appreciate art or culture. They would call information for numbers they could easily look up in the phone book.

Twenty years later baby boomers were convinced the so-called MTV generation signaled the end of Hollywood and the world as we know it along with it. The quick cuts and the ADD this and the visual that were going to be the end of substance and quality.

And now we have the MTV generation pissing and moaning about the smartphone generation.

I figure I've got at least one more round of this silliness to look forward to and with any luck I might even stick around for one more after that.

You know several people who never go to theaters and never watch films on television sets? They don't watch films on tablets or laptops?

They watch films on phones and phones alone?

Color me skeptical.

My parents own 2 blu-ray movies and 12 DVDs
My brother owns 1 blu-ray and 8 DVDs
My other brother never upgraded past VHS

They all think I'm weird for having as many Blu-ray Discs and DVDs as I have.

"In my day we watched movies on smartwatches with crappy 8K resolution and by gum we appreciated the artform. We didn't have it easy either, I had to walk 5 miles barefoot in the snow to buy my first smartwatch....

Nowadays these dumb kids piping movies directly into their visual cortex, they don't appreciate movies like my generation. I predict the end of cinema..blah blah"

Then why were you whining about the under 40s and implied that you were part of the above 40 crowd?

Heh, exactly. ATT has kind of beaten the joke into the ground but some of those U-Verse commercials were pretty funny.

Kids have always gone to the movies more as a place to hang out than to watch the actual movie. But whatever the motive, yeah they are supporting them more.

You complained about the "next gen watching on portable devices" and you said "they" and "them" which would imply you're in "40 and over crowd"

Well, he did also say he wouldn't be an old man for thirty years.

I guarantee you, for all our tough talk about sixty being the new forty there aren't too many in the over forty crowd who think it will take them thirty more years to get old.

OK, clarify "older people"? Considering that most of us "older people" grew up with these comics as kids I think you need to stop trying to fit every age group into a particular box. People of all ages still go to the movies and there are still occasionally long lines or sold out movies. Time to broaden your horizons a bit.

Next next gen. Read it again.

I mentioned 40 because the target group is 16-34. That's whom the industry are more interested in. I mentioned 40s and over because typically people are married and have homes by then. You can take that how you wish.

You know as well as I do I am discussing trends and how that affects the industry. Or are you trying to patronise me?

I consider old to be 60 and over. Is that ok with you? It's my opinion.

No, I want you to clarify your statement and back it up with facts. So do the board a favor and stop playing the victim here. If you can't debate without insulting your fellow members maybe a forum isn't the best place for you. You are confrontational, not conversational in your posts. You think because you appreciate the medium that is the best quality(for now) that gives you a pass on your patronizing and condescending attitude towards your fellow members. How you have not been suspended or banned is beyond me.
