I DETEST having to pay extra for these discs that I've no intention of playing PLUS the extended editions of movies only seem to be on these double/triple play editions too!! A few times I've even sold some used triple play blu rays editions for enough to rebuy the single disc edition new instead!

Something like that.

The total percentage of people all over that have rigs like we find here are few, and I'm not talking about the 6 subwoofers crowd. Most enjoy, only a few make it a high priority enough to do the expense. many friends love coming here for movie night, they just love it, but there 3 daughters in Uni, a house to pay for,....you get it, normal people leading a normal life.

You might think that people who spend $5k for a 2 weeks trip is horribly stupid if they don't own a HT, for you that might be the logical thing, it's your life (passions do invade and inhabit our lives). For others, no point at all, young children at night so nothing stupid loud, why bother then.

You seem to lack a bigger perspective, and I'd add that I get it, passions are fire and we don't want the ice. But passions are very personal in the end and as long as you have what you need, stop worrying and enjoy Steed buddy, you still have many many years, even DVD won't go away, think BD will?
You are a gentleman.

very true. Don't assume being better in one area makes it better all around. How many classic movies would be considered junk if all you thought was that it was no good unless it was in color? Blu-ray may allow for better video and audio but there is a price for that. Tons of indy bands like to release a live cd/dvd pack - that wouldn't be practical with a blu-ray so in that case the dvd is actually superior to meet their needs.

I can't wait for the official 4k bluray confirmation thread. Starting to get itchy feet for all that 4k goodness now. Also, I'm sure the Star Wars thread will be great once that first trailer is released. 4k and Star wars! Now there is a perfect marriage waiting to happen.

If I remember right, there was some controversy at the time with Star Wars only being a 2K scan and would never better then that. Could be wrong though.

EDIT: I was right. Ep 2 and 3 were only shot in 1080p digitally and the effects in Ep 1 were 2k scans, as were the SE effects on the OT. So the prequel trilogy will at least look no better in 4K, barring upscaling. And they certainly aren't going to redo the effects.

Yep, and it seems a no brainer to use such films to usher in all of the 4K goodies. Hey, maybe one of the first UHD BD to show up

One thing no one has really mentioned in regards to PQ - I'm as much of a fan of this as anyone else on this board, and obviously it's especially nice when you see older films like Taxi Driver or The Warriors in Blu, since the PQ is so obviously superior to previous formats.

That being said, in some cases PQ can be too good - i.e., I've especially noticed this with some CGI-heavy films (LOTR, Pacific Rim, etc.) In other words, the CGI will actually be more obvious when the PQ is of extremely high quality.

IMHO one of the only recent films I saw where the CGI wasn't as in-your-face obvious was 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes; this had the most realistic CGI of any film I've seen...

So, in other words, though 4K appears to be the wave of the future, most films/TV shows on Blu are good enough for me. Of course, I was raised on watching network TV (without cable) on a CRT TV back in the day, so my expectations may be lower than some younger folks...

It's a small price to pay isn't it?

Regarding older films, I thought the shining looked stunning on bluray.

I agree with the looks and nostalgia. There are so many films I discovered on the tube, born in '61, it was theater or TV. Well there was something absolutely comforting in watching an old movie on a 26" CRT from 12' away with all the garbage we'd get once on the networks. I miss those, similar to the family gathering for a night of homemade 8mm and Super 8. It wasn't pretty and it would not be the same to watch these today in glorious HD. You need to see it as it is, like listening to a very old 33 RPM or 78 LP. The scratches n pop are obtrusive, and they are wonderful.

Not everything needs to be modernized, let's not scrub away history altogether please

I think the actors are going to be the ones to suffer most, imagine how clear skin defects etc. will now show up that they didn't need to worry about that much. Plastic surgeons are going to capitalize, mark my words hehe

Yes - this has already happened with older films. I was re-watching 1985's The Breakfast Club for the first time on Blu recently, and noticed a very obvious bump/mole on someone's face; I hadn't noticed this on previous releases.

And, over in the X-files thread (Wish list), there is a recent HD screen shot of Scully; for the first time, I noticed some light freckles on her nose & face - however, this wasn't something I minded seeing...

Correct - I think this is probably an attitude that older folks like us have (I'm in my early 40's), since we grew up with films/TV shows that didn't have perfect PQ.

For example, the Blu of Taxi Driver (one of the best Blu examples of an older film I've seen) has extremely enhanced PQ, but still has quite a bit of grain - instead of minding the grain, I actually liked this since, to me, it harkens back to previous releases - while still having superior PQ.

Agreed. I love having the best there is for a movie I enjoy, but still have a huge kick watching it in less than stellar fashion on late late night movies. The day that also goes away we'll know how far we've gotten
