I've seen some really nice price drops on good movies, but many that I would go for never show up at a discount. The wait never ends on these features.

I would definitely argue that some films/TV shows would not necessarily benefit from a Blu upgrade. Examples are: '80's Twilight Zone (great show IMHO, but the PQ was never that great), and the '80's TV series Tales from the Darkside.

Going along with this, I have seen some Blu's whose PQ isn't much better than their DVD counterparts: Midnight Cowboy, Dreamscape, and Leaving Las Vegas come to mind.

That all being said, I would also argue that Blu is a preferable upgrade to DVD, if only because the format is more durable & less prone to scratches. Since a Blu is typically only a couple more $ than a regular DVD, usually I'll go with Blu...

I also agree that some DVD's these days are way too expensive. I see some stores selling some films on regular DVD for upwards of $20. For a DVD?! In 2014?! Way overpriced....

Could you give some examples of the titles on your want list that never drop to your price range? Just curious. I have a few Criterion titles. Most of them never drop but that's par for the course when it comes to Criterion.

Titles escape me at the moment - but let me add: I only buy at brick and mortar locations. That may skew it a bit. Happens a lot though - if I was standing in front of the rack at Fry's or Best Buy I'd give you titles galore.

I think only Dodge offers a Blu-ray system in their mini-vans. So for almost a decade only DVD players with SD monitors have been put in virtually all vehicles so equipped. That may be a significant market, especially for kids movies.

Another large market with DVD players is computers. Nearly all can play DVDs but I doubt a significant number of those in use have Blu-ray capability.

I just don't see DVD ever totally going away.

I don't know a single person who has one of those DVD players in their vehicle.

Those are as niche of a market as 3D Blu-rays are.

Do you know any SUV or mini-van owners with young kids?

I have several friends and family with them installed either at purchase or after market. Mostly families with children who tend to make longer trips.

Even if you don't know anyone, that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Wanna know something cool? Most every car ya get today has a "disc" player in the dash, right? Well, that's a DVD drive. I burn MP3 files onto a DVDR disc, and slide it in and it plays. Either of our cars (Pathfinder truck AND lil' VW Jetta)

We have a full sized conversion van with a 20" Sharp LCD and a DVD player. Been up and down the eastern seaboard with it.

It's actually becoming quite common for new cars NOT to bother with disc players. Pretty soon they will be phased out completely.

Aaahhhhh.
Well I was just implying that what many think is a CD player, is actually a DVD drive that plays your files

I call BS. Still seeing DVD drives in cars along with HDD and screens. I know some car makers are even doing BD drives.

The use of the drive might be changing but they will be in a vehicle for some time.

Exactly. Too many people here think their subset of friends is representative of the entire market. I would not think of making a trip without entertainment for the kids.

True. Cassette Decks were in new cars until 2009!
Disc players (DVD or CD) will most likely be in em for another fifteen years

I know this may be difficult to believe, but outside of your small bubble of bourgie first-world friends, these are not commonplace.

The barriers to entry are numerous enough to make this quite obviously a small niche.

1) Must be suburban
2) Must be middle class
3) Must have children
4) Must have a sufficient number of children that a minivan is necessary
5) Must have opted for minivan with this functionality.

In case you haven't noticed, all of these requirements describe an extremely small portion of the current American populace.

You're the one who made it sounds like your limited number of friends were representative of everyone. I was just saying that there are period who do have then. And FYI, I am living in Papua New Guinea, a developing (aka third-class) country.

Back in the States I know people who living in the city who are lower income with two children who drive 10+ year-old junkers that have cheap DVD systems hooked up.

So stop being so judgmental about things you no little about.

How about you stop being so judgmental until you develop some reading comprehension skills?

I never said they didn't exist. I said they were a small fraction of the population. Just like people with 3D Blu-ray players.

Judgmental?!? You're the one who calls anyone with an in-car player "bourgie first-world". You're the one who assumes that because your small group of friends don't have them, then the players must be niche. I say they are enough people with them that they are not niche. I'm not claiming everyone and their uncle has one. Just saying that they are more prevalent than you assert them to be.

FYI, I am trained and employed in practical linguistics which includes more reading comprehension skills than most careers. Why don't you demonstrate some reading comprehension skills? Not once did I say you claimed they don't exist.
