I believe they said that my generation had "short attention spans" after we got hooked on MTVs fast paced edits and quick cuts. But we grew up and wanted more. But I see your point in that - yes - there's way more options now to distract the short attention spanned youth..especially with their phone always in their hand.

But, I believe every generation has their artists; someone that will want to sit and read a novel, write a book, paint a large mural, create a visual world in the form of a feature length movie, and there'll be those that will want to watch it....etc. But I think those youthful folks of today that love all that Vine, Facebook, and YouTube...etc will grow up and appreciate a feature film.

I think film will only truly die if it starts sucking

Millennial's aren't getting younger. In forty years a sit down experience will be the norm for them.

Multitasking and flicking through their smartphone is the same as eating, washing etc.. Almost an extended limb for many now. I don't see that going away with age.

Lol **** vine and I never got the appeal of Twitter. But yeah I have Facebook and YouTube. However no one I know is using any of that as a substitute for movies or TV which you keep suggesting.

Just wait. Facebook I believe are getting into the video media game and expect youtube to continue their push into multi channel multi million pound deals with the likes of Disney, Dreamworks etc.. (In my opinion of course). There is a reason all these media companies are investing in short form entertainment and it's not because no one is using them, trust me.

I know you're the voice for the generation and everything but your argument is akin to someone panicking about the future of the book because all the pre-teens are reading nothing but comic books.

Typical assumption. Things those of your limited years take for granted won't be as effortlessly performed forty tears from now.

Check out the paragraph starting with 'The Youtube disrupters' there is a guy called Dawson who is a video blogger and he fears that vine's six second clips could be the way media is going. That's what I took from his comments anyway.

I don't think it has ever left the top 10 in disc sales in any week since it debuted.

But other than that massive release, I don't think there has been anything else that has done very strong sales on disc this year. It's been a relatively weak blockbuster year. Even Guardians of the Galaxy couldn't prevent Blu-ray sales from being down 31% from last year during the same week.
Wel in that week last year they released Despicable Me 2 and Fast 6 so its very tough titles to be up against which also likely had great sales. This year in the week only Guardians is the big one. Last year it was 2 big ones so its quite hard for one movie to defeat sales for 2 big juggernauts.

TMNT seem to be next big seller.

The fun-filled and action-packed blockbuster from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Films, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, packed a major punch with phenomenal sales during its first week of release on Blu-ray™ and DVD.

“The extraordinary performance of TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES is a testament to the wildly-entertaining re-launch of this beloved franchise and a major success for Paramount,” said Dennis Maguire, President, Worldwide Home Media Distribution, Paramount Pictures. “Consumers clearly still want to own high-quality, repeatable entertainment, which is a positive sign for our industry as a whole.”

TMNT won't be as big as Guardians, but hopefully it'll compare better to the weaker 2013 lineup in that same week.

This movie slipped through the cracks for me. I want to buy it but I only buy 3D versions and now it's $35. So I have to wait until it drops.

Speaking of 3D, the HMM top 20 showed an impressive 33% week 1 3D share for Guardians. The price was only $20 at most places, but still a good share.

Yeah 3D sells if the price is reasonable. I also only buy 3D but i got it for christmas so lucky me . TMNT is already bigger as Guardians with more sales in its first week. it says in the article

It says later in the article that it's the biggest disc seller in proportion to its box office. Guardians did quite a bit more box office. Furthermore the better Guardian sales are supported in the HMM top 20 chart. Guardians sold half as many in week 2 as TMNT did in week one. Normal attrition for week two is a third as many copies as week one. But we'll see in a few days.

$35 3D price now seems ridiculous compared to Guardians and Apes which just came out as well (not to mention a bunch of others that came out in the last few months that are available for $20 or less). I guess the week 2 3D share will be awful.

Anyway it is nice to see Blu-ray SKUs of blockbuster movies without a DVD included.

The same as you can enjoy The tree of life and Pain & Gain, you can be 20, have an extensive use of your smartphone and sit down through what are longer and longer movies.
Otherwise, blockbusters would be much shorter than what they currently are.
My issue with such statements is that they are so generic and superficial they dont reflect any real generation in all its complexity but also do not take in account what was said about past generations : TV would prevent people going out, video games would drive us crazy etc etc.

Well, for the first time ever in the UK tv ownership is down. First time EVER! Eyes are being stolen by youtube, vine and whatever 'cool'new service is out there. Advertisers are starting to look at vine and some are jumping ship from youtube. Attention spans for the under 25s are getting worse. Think that is safe to say. That maybe social media's fault but it is a trend that I think is here to stay. Any tv show or movie over 1 hour in length is too long for that section of folks I think. Too many distractions these days. That does not hbode well for movies and the big screen imo. I also believe movies will indeed be much shorter over the next few years. Especially movies that go straight to netflix, Amazon etc.. Read the article I linked. It's not just me with those views.

Yup and a generation before that self-styled pundits feared that television itself would create a generation of dullards. Film and the written word were to wither on the vine as the masses stared at the idiot box.

What is this claim based on? Some sort of clinical research?

Or is it just something you 'know'?

How do you explain binge viewing? That section of folks have taken to watching entire seasons of a television series in one sitting.

How do you explain that?

Well studies just won't cut it, but if a video blogger says it then it must be true!

My points was, this is a guy in the eye of the storm. He wants to make it big in film and is taking what he thinks is the correct route as far as I know (maximum exposure) his point I understand is that people are being offered jobs directly related to six second clips on vine and (in my interpretation) he fears that may become what media is in the future, basically just a mass of short form self made videos.

You guys know that the 10-25 age group is a major key market and that is the group using these services most.
