Are the PS3 and XBOX ONE reverse compatible? Does Xbox One play Xbox 360 discs? Does PS4 play PS3 discs?

The only time I did was when I used to travel a lot with work and a film was a good way to spend that dead time in the airports or in planes (if not working on stuff).

You will be in disbelief when you read that in India the market share of blu ray is not only crippled by dvd but also because of VCD. Yes you read that right. In India VCD movies still make up a major share of the market at almost 40% while DVD is at around 55% leaving Blu ray with a measly 5% market share.
New Hollywood and Bollywood movies still are released on VCD format in 2 disc special editions!!
The reason for this is the cost as new release Hollywood VCDs cost $5,DVD version will cost $10 and Blu Ray will be $20-30 depending on whether its 3D blu ray or not so turns out blu rays are far too expensive for most people.
Another issue is the market penetration of the PS3 and PS4 consoles in India. PS3 has sold only about 500k units since launch while Ps4 is about 50k. Add in standalone blu ray players and blu ray writers in laptops and desktops, xbox one, etc the total blu ray devices still tops out at just 2 million at most.
Although standalone players are finally affordable at around $80-100 for a Sony or Philips model, the PS3 is still far too expensive at $350 and PS4 and XB1 at $600.
Another big reason is the HDTV market penetration in India where most(read 80%) people still use CRT sets.
All these factors ensures blu ray will be facing uphill battle.

Its the same story in Thailand too.
Still, in the west, DVDs should have died out by now. My local supermarket still sells expensive DVDs, no Blurays to be seen.
Out of my 500+ blurays, not one dvd that came with the bluray has been used. Not to mention the useless ultraviolet or such.
Just sell blurays with just the bluray disks, and lower the price a bit.

So it looks like blu-ray and DVD will simply coexist or die together. Every year that goes by further solidifies my thought that blu-ray won't kill off DVD. I guess as long as physical discs are still relevant, DVD will be around. Annoying

Aside from maybe paying a little extra if a BD-DVD combo pack is the only Blu-ray release of a given film, how is DVD annoying you?

Because its old. Its old tech.
Here we are, in a time where technology changes and advances so fast, that a computer you bought and even built ahead of its time in, say, 2001, would be obsolete right now! Yet you're OK with DVD, tech from 1997, still kicking ass? I thought I was in a blu-ray forum!?

As long as physical media sticks around, I don't care that Blu-ray hasn't taken over DVD. It has in my house a long time ago and that's all that matters to me these days.

It's just weird to me, and it has to be for you guys too. Most people in 2015 see a flip phone from 2004 and laugh. But a 1997 DVD is OK?
But its not just that: the word, "DVD", gets used for blu-ray by the ignorant. Not only by some people ("Let's buy this DVD" - when they are holding a blu-ray), but, even on website's ("Disc: DVD. Format: Blu-ray"). No! Its not a DVD! Haaaaa.

Its like how people misuse "q-tip" or "Xerox".
"Hey, I'm gonna make a Xerox of this form"
Uhmm, no you're not. We have a Canon photo copy machine

A person can be smart, but people are stupid.

Some technologies don't age like others do. Why are you spending so much energy on hating DVD? Just ignore it.

You are so completely missing the point.

Maybe you will understand when you get a little older. That is not meant to be a shot at you...just a realization that people sometimes change. As we get older, our perspectives on what is most important to us tend to change.

Do you buy a new car every year? By your definition your old one is obsolete whenever the new model comes out. I have a 2013 model car with Bluetooth capability built in, nav system, blind spot monitoring, multi-position heated leather seats, auto-adjusting bi-xenon headlights, USB ports, voice command activated phone calling synced to my smart phone, dual zone climate control, and it can download my text messages to the nav screen. It's fun to drive and gets over 40 mpg on the highway.

Do you think that means I'm going to sell my 27 year old RX-7 turbo because it's old, obsolete technology? It doesn't have any of the tech gadgets, and gets less than 20 mpg when I'm driving it hard and working the turbos. Hell no. It is more fun to drive, I can throw it around corners on a race track and still have a blast with it, it's styling still turns heads to this day, and it goes 150 mph. It is also rear wheel drive like all real sports cars should be. Oh yeah...wildly revving rotary engine that is an absolute freakin' blast to wind out.

You see it comes down to what you value.

Many of you seem to not value DVD at all because it is not the latest, greatest technology. Many, many of the rest of us do still value it because what is most important to us is content versus delivery method. If I have the option of DVD or Blu-ray I'm going with Blu-ray every single time for obvious reasons.

But when the choice is DVD or no movie I'm going with DVD every time. It's not even a difficult choice to me. There are hundreds and thousands of DVDs readily available that are not out on Blu-ray and never will be. Do I just ignore hundreds of my favorite movies because I can't get it in the latest, greatest format?

And if your answer is yes, let me ask you this. What happens when popular titles start being released in 4K? Are you planning on only buying those and immediately selling off your entire Blu-ray collection? By your standards it will be as obsolete to you as DVD is to you now. Where does it end?

I try to find the movie on Netflix or maybe a rental with Vudu or iTunes in those cases.

Relax bro. I know where you're coming from on this but you're not going to change it. I find it ridiculous when I'm out at Best Buy or somewhere like that, and I'm shopping for blus, and the person next to me is talking to the person they brought about buying the DVD version of a movie and watching it on their HDTV saying " I'm going to get the DVD because on my high Def tv, it will look amazing. My player upscales to 1080p so I don't need the blu-ray, plus it will save me some money ". Man, you don't know how bad I want to grab the person when I hear that and shake the shit out of them, but what will that accomplish ya know, NOTHING!!!! Now, I inform folks when I hear stuff like that. Everyone should and maybe one day it just might help get rid of that pesky DVD you loathe so much. LOL!

Generally speaking, you aren't paying extra for the combo pack. The average prices are about the same regardless of whether a DVD is included or not.

Like I have said, there are much, much bigger threats to home cinema than a ageing format. My views are well known and I will comment further when it is appropriate.

Some people have accepted that DVD is here to stay, others haven't. Being angry about it isn't going to change anything, so you may as well get used to it and be happy that Blu-ray is here to stay too.

Thanks all! Playing devils advocate here, so I can get some compelling responses, reasons or just a different outlook for a response I'm writing (for somewhere else, not here).
I could care less that DVDs are still here. Just because I don't want em, and started the thread poll "Would you rather a blu-ray for $15.99 or blu-ray/DVD combo for $19.99", doesn't mean I don't care if others do want em.
True, if DVD isn't dead, then surely blu-ray isn't (just for the sole reason that all the hardware we find online and in stores is suited for HD (BLU-RAY PLAYERS, LED 1080P TVs).

However, an interesting point was brought up; if blu-ray fans want away from DVD because its old tech, does that mean blu-ray fans will be against blu-ray discs when 4K Ultra Blu-ray is available?
That, to me, isn't the same.
Maybe its because even less titles will be available on 4K blu-ray, and we know this, so we are going into 4K with the knowledge that we're not going to be replacing our entire library with 4K blus. Hell, I still need 7 more blu-ray discs to replace my DVD library.
Good discussion guys.
Stay sexy
