I know I said I would initially set this one out but I'm starting to get excited to learn more about UHD Blu-ray. I'm hoping the BDA ends up improving upon the negatives of the Blu-ray format such as SD content (extras), managed copy, and region coding.

Walmart is still big on DVDs and that's a huge market. I can't believe new releases for DVDs r still going for $20.

A sizeable portion of the population has yet to upgrade to HD and Blu-ray hence the $20.00 price for new DVD releases.

With any luck if Ultra HD is here this Christmas then not many more will upgrade to Blu-ray and skip straight to Ultra HD Blu-ray instead, either that or hold off for 8K.

Agreed and it's probably one reason why some have shifted to streaming.

Not a chance, if they haven't found it worth it to upgrade to BD by now then they definitely won't just skip to UHD BD. With all new technologies the cost for early adopters is higher. If you thought those holdouts were complaining about a slightly higher price for BD just wait for their complaints about UHD BD.

I still remember, back when BD was first released or even a few years later, people stating they weren't upgrading to BD because they had just bought into DVD. It's not our fault those folks waited 9+ years to buy into the old format.

Those people must really have been behind the times. I got my first DVD Player in 2003 (6 years after the format was released) and felt that I was a late adopter to the format.

If folks were just getting their first DVD players in 2006 (the year BD was released) they must really have been "behind the 8 ball" when it came to adopting that format...amazing...

Unfortunately, they do exist, and not to point fingers, but here is a post from another member that just got into BD, 9 years later, and appears to be unaware of the upcoming UHD BD format.

Wow, but to this person's defense, maybe they're just getting into this hobby which most of us have been a part of a couple of decades now.

We'll always have some of that too as new generations become of age and gain more purchasing power.

My intent wasn't to point blame at any one person but rather I was using that post as an example.

Well, I can easily see being a late adopter re: the Blu format, since DVD's are still being released - and, unless you're an HD aficionado like those of us on this board, you may still think DVD's are acceptable. This would obviously also depend on the quality of your TV set...

However, being a late adopter to the DVD format (in the 200X's) is much more puzzling. When I got my first DVD player in early 2003, at that time VHS tapes were already starting to be on their way out. So, it's puzzling why people would have waited until 2006 to get to get their first DVD player, unless they just barely watched movies. By the mid-200X's, most companies had stopped producing VHS tapes...

Note I'm not trying to criticize anyone here - I honestly don't care what other people do or don't do in regards to home video; these posts are just me thinking out loud. I know of someone that wasn't a big movie fan, and didn't get their first DVD Player until 2010/2011.... To each their own...

In 2015, $20 for a regular DVD is an overpriced rip-off - those are 200X prices. I wouldn't even pay that much for most Blu's...

New release DVDs sell for $15-20, while Blu-ray is around $20-25. It's been that way for quite a long time.

Blu ray's are backwards compatible with DVD, and DVD's are still packed in with a lot of Blu-rays.

They probably didn't get into VHS until 1999.

Default This thread wow!!!!!!

I understand this is blu ray forum but damn is there a need for a 70+ page thread of butt-hurt that ppl still prefer DVD over BD? Why do ppl care what format someone buys a film on? Does it affect anyone in anyway? I actually like that BD was not forced down anyones throats and that there is more options especially now with UV.

The thing is DVD is still popular because its much more affordable and just simply good enough quality for most ppl. Not to mention unless you have a tv screen higher then 40" your not going to notice much difference honestly.

Anywho, I am happy DVD is still going strong I just wish studios would stop ripping off DVD buyers by charging $20 for a bare bones new release DVD.

Do you actually mean smaller than 40" since any difference would be more pronounced the larger the screen size?

I just wish the studios would release more titles on BD which seems to have taken a back seat to DVD. I'm perplexed why the studios would even offer native HD content on a SD format but not provide it on the HD format.

In my room I have a 24" TV and in my living room I have a 32" and I notice a huge difference on both.

I think its really up to the individual to discern a difference. For the casual consumer who just wants a tv to work and movies to be priced reasonable... They're not going to spend the time calibrating or making sure things are perfect... And like you said I'd say really over 55'' would you truly be like OK maybe i need hd, even though I have friends with 60'' that crop basic channels or dvds just to fill the screen [mind-boggling]

when I visit my mom I still see her watching the base channels (I think mostly out of connivence much more reasonable for her to punch 5 in for a channel she wants than learn to hit 534 for the HD version) even when the hd ones are superior, these consumers will never pay more for a blu-ray vs. dvd or take the time to see or care about the difference.

The only way to get some of these consumers to adapt is to phase out the technology completely [basically dragging them kicking and screaming]

It's (in my opinion) falsehoods like claiming you need a large screen to see the difference that causes this situation in the first place. The difference is obvious on a 32 inch screen and if you can't see it, sorry but that's your eyesight (again, in my opinion)
