Mate, I had tons of people telling me there would be no difference. I was stunned by the difference when I played my first Bluray. That was on a 37 inch screen from over six feet away. I just don't believe what those guys say.

Nope my eyesight is just fine thank you very much. I own a 40" TV and really there isn't much difference honestly. BD in my opinion only stands out in a much bigger screen with a good home theater setup.

Either way it's silly to be butt-hurt that DVD is still going strong I believe both formats can stick around just fine together well into the future as I don't want Digital to ever be close to being the dominant format.

I joined because I wanted to? I am not against anyone here or any blu ray fans but this thread is ridiculous. We should be happy that physical formats are still selling well and Digital is not any closer to being the dominant format.

I'm all for physical media (only). Blu-ray after almost a decade should dominate especially in an all HD world now. That's the whole point of this thread!

I don't see why there can't be room in the market for two physical formats. I am just happy ppl still care enough to buy a movie in physical format in 2015 since streaming seems to get more popular. DVD/BD can exist together just fine and hopefully it stays that way well into the future.

I don't see it as being butt-hurt as you put it. Really, it's the innovators and early adopters that drive and make or break a new technology; not the average joe, so to speak. I was an innovator for DVD, as was I for Blu-ray, and what I find ironic is that when I supported DVD back in the early days people thought I was crazy for doing so and they thought DVD was just a fade. Now, all these years later these same people are all over DVD; probably because it's cheap. Obviously, they didn't know what was in front of them and if they had a say when DVD was first released it would have failed miserably. The average joes are just late to the game. What's crazy is the average joe is content with a standard definition format when there is a much better high definition format for HD content.

This raises an interesting question:
If HD-Blu-ray is 8 years old, yet, SD-DVD sells just as much as blu-ray today, then, when DVD was 8 years old, did VHS still sell as well as DVD?

Honestly, there really is a difference. Maybe you are sitting too far away? You should be seeing a massive difference. Just colours alone should tell the story.

Well, considering the handful of VHS came out in 2005, I would say no. DVD had pretty much taken over the market by 2002.

Well, at least down here in Houston, TX anyway I should say.

So VCR/VHS was available.
Then, DVD came out in 1995.
Eight years into DVD brings us to 2003.
I know VCRs were still around in 2003, mostly for recording shows off of TV...etc. But, true, in 2003, I didn't know anybody still buying a VHS tape of a movie they liked.

Neither did I and most of the rental stores had switched over to mostly DVD by that time as well.

If you'd said under 5 feet I'd have said ok, but over 6ft away... 7-8 I think optimal viewing distance is 60+inches for the human eye to see the difference...

I'm not doubting your potential at great eye sight but this is far and away NOT the norm. Same way I couldn't tell a difference between a 30k B&W speaker setup and a 100k setup.. My ears just weren't good but certain people swear they could.

Yeah they were slowly being phased out by then but I still had mine hooked up in 2003.

DVDs look like garbage on many HDTVs. Older up resolution DVD players did subpar jobs, the best I've seen is the PS3. So to say that he saw a large difference on an HDTV between the two isn't surprising. But on a well tuned SD CRT of the same ( smaller) size, the pictures would be closer because there is no need for line doubling, etc that makes up for the lack of info on the HD set. The thing I've seen that's convincing is you can't tell 720p from 1080p at 37".

Well there are numerous reasons that "Average Joes" are content with DVD over BD. Mainly its cost and convenience which is way more important to most consumers than better PQ. Also once again unless you have a fancy big screen HDTV your not really going to tell much difference imo. Believe me I admit BD is amazing when you can afford to enjoy it but honestly DVD does just fine for me most of the time. Not to mention DVD's are so damn affordable nowadays and there are so many online retailers as well retail stores that you can snag used DVD's for really cheap.

I just don't see why it needs to be an issue if ppl still prefer to buy DVD over BD. If you enjoy BD and that is your format of choice so be it I hardly see how ppl preferring to buy DVD over BD would affect your enjoyment of the format. It doesn't need to be a competition we should all just be happy that physical formats are still going strong in this Digital era.

Well I do view my TV from a distance but I don't see how that can make much of a difference. Yes there have been some films that I have seen on BD that looked amazing and I can see the higher PQ but that has happened very few times in my home entertainment experience.

DVD looks just fine to me of course that will probably change when one day I invest in a bigger TV but for now it makes due. I still buy BD for new releases but since DVD's are so cheap nowadays especially used one's I can't help but stock up more on DVD over BD.
