The sad thing is that home video business is like any other business and it isn't driven by what's right, but what's demanded. If the people want to watch movies on their watches and pay money for it, then the studios will be happy to oblige.

I have been slated for suggesting this. Be careful. . People don't yet realise what enormous damage Digital will do to the industry. Not until it's too late. People are imagining this happy utopia but it will be the opposite. DVD will be the least of our problems.

I can see the new 4K format ending up like D-VHS..
I have to agree... at this point, im usually an early adopter of new technology, ive invested in a VHS collection.. then laser-discs in the 90's then DVD and SACD /DVD-A and Blu-ray.. ill probably invest in a 4K TV at some point but my 2007 vintage Sony Bravia has to die first. i am getting older and wiser and getting tired of upgrading large collections of movies.
all that being said i am curious to see what Oppo Comes up with in terms of 4k blu ray player but i would think thats a few years away.

Its just hard to deny this generation for the most part streams a lot and even myself have got caught up in it a little but I am never going to sell my physical discs or stop buying them.
Even if streaming does overtake physical statistically, I don't really think it means all that much in the grand scheme of things, as most use it as a form of renting, it's not the same as purchasing. As far as Internet based digital content goes, I've got Netflix (I use a VPN to access multiple countries content), as well as Stan, which is another service here in Australia similar to Netflix, I've only had them for a few months, and to be honest I'm already over them. As for actually purchasing content online and streaming it, I can do that too with physical media, by simply ripping a disc, storing it to an HDD, USB drive, memory card, in the cloud etc, a smart person knows that phyiscal media gives you more options

Why would you assume I am a digital fan? I have bought two things on iTunes. Even if I were, why would it matter to what I was saying? I have bought most of the movies I own on Blu-Ray.

If you want to watch movies/TV shows on tiny watch & phone screens where you can barely see - let alone appreciate - the picture, more power to you. I will never do so - in fact, since TV screens have gotten bigger I've gotten used to watching media on larger & larger screens.

The smallest screen I'll watch movies/TV shows on is a laptop screen, and even that's too small....

Why would someone want to watch their media on a watch or phone screen?!?! That sounds so NOT fun to me!!! The bigger the screen the better IMO!!!

They don't want to watch on a watch wcreen yet. That graphic was (I think) a witty reply to what some consider my outrageous prediction that films on a smartwatch will be the next big thing. It is an horrific prospect and one i have been warning of for at least a year now. Digital and everything it represents is just one big shovel of shit.

My son (15) watch FOTR on his MOTO G (4 inch) and said he loved it (sigh). I think watching on phone/tablet makes sense when on the road (think 8 hour drive to OBX, etc).

What scares me is how many people watch netflix and for many, that is "acceptable". They trade convenience for quality, or don't even see the difference.

My last post was meant as sarcasm to some extent re: people watching films on their watches. However, I do see people watching TV shows/movies on their smartphones - I think a smartphone screen is too small to watch media on, but to each their own...

Yeah, it's 4.5 inches. Hard to believe isn't it? Especially a movie like LOTR.

I wonder if constant mobile phone use wires their brains differently. Perhaps it's time for a scientific study .

Right, I can see watching stuff on your phone or tablet if you're stuffed in the back seat on a friggin' road trip or something. Like you know, you're on your way to a relative's house during Christmas break. But, an everyday thing? I couldn't do it. Give me a 55 inch or above screen and I'll be happy

In 2011, watching movies on mobile devices was not that appealing to entertainment consumers:

“Consumers ranked the ability to obtain content through a mobile app for a specific film/TV show as the second least appealing feature. Of the nine possible options, this was ranked eighth in appeal; 44% said they would pay nothing for this option, while 43% would pay only up to $5. The main reason for a lack of interest is that watching movies on a small phone screen is seen as a less enjoyable experience.

––In qualitative discussions, the younger consumers were adamant — they simply don’t watch much content on their phones. Older consumers (ages 33–45) were somewhat more receptive to the idea, but with a lot of caveats (such as blockbuster movies only or the ability to transfer the purchase to other platforms).”

Things have changed since 2011:

“In our survey, 62% of Millennials ages 18 to 24 said they expect half of all TV watching to take place on wearable screens in the future.”

http://www.pwc.com/us/en/industry/en...ble-future.pdf

PWC research does use social media such as this forum, focus groups and random sampling to support their conclusions:

“Chatter on social media can often reveal changes in consumer perceptions, for better or for worse. In January of this year, PwC embarked on a thorough social listening study to detect trends in attitudes and values when it comes to wearable technology, conducting software searches across “the social web”—including blogs, Twitter, Facebook, forums and online news outlets with comment boards. To do this, PwC created a search of relevant key words, fine-tuning and optimizing this list based on results, and then analyzed the data against situational context. Next, over a six month period, we examined nearly six million social media mentions, analyzing them for insight into how consumers feel about these emerging technologies.”

Lol, that was so funny imo. I thought they shared my view of an apocalyptic, stare at our watch world but they have gone the virtual reality route lol. It's about time the industry realised that young people are NOT going to wear contraptions on their head, regardless of huge movie screens, concerts, games etc.. Vr is niche and this whole article and survey collapses like a stack of cards imo, when they mention Google glass and headphones that double as visors.
