I highly doubt they will invest anything more in DVD improvements. Even though it still is the dominant physical format sales-wise, it's still legacy. And there would be compatibility issues as mentioned above which would certainly make it a non-starter (the DVD user base is the least tech saavy and they only upgrade their players when they die).

this.

an HDR capable DVD player would presumably be at least as expensive as a blu-ray player.

This. The DVD Forum hasn't been active in over 3 years so I can't see them becoming active again just to add new capability so late in the game.

Well, I don’t know if it’s best to call it a ‘panacea’, depending on how the content is graded and mastered, yes, perhaps for videophiles, but I believe it better to think of it as the next worthwhile visual improvement parameter in next-gen TV (after we’ve achieved increased [4K over HD] spatial resolution content and display) that the industry could/can economically bring to market for the consumer. There will always be something new.

For instance after HDR, once the economic/technological impediments in the middle of the acquisition -> delivery chain are overcome, I would expect the next next-gen TV feature offered to be HFR non-cinematic content, e.g. sports, etc. which will induce TV manufacturers to provide panels with better response time (than current consumer LCDs) to do justice to showing 100/120 fps. And guess what type that display technology be? Your fave.

Or, if personal devices are more your thing, a whole day prior to October’s SMPTE Tech and Expo will be devoted to examining how “VR and AR are changing the media and entertainment industry”….. http://motionpictureaudiogear.com/sm...on-smpte-2015/

On that VR/AR note, it’s on a lot of marketing (and investor) minds, but few are publicly speaking about it - http://www.marketwatch.com/story/how..._share_twitter

Yep, it's quicker to get the content digitally than physically (unless you have it straight away) and makes it weight less. Still, PC towers have the standard DVD burner and Blu-ray but that's for a different audience.

Anyhow, as for music I still prefer to purchase CDs of series/bands I enjoy so I can listen to their music in the best shape possible. That or digital FLAC but FLAC is still growing so nowhere near as big as that clunky MP3 format.

Like for example, I bought it from http://musique.coeurdepirate.com/album/child-of-light and they also offered a digital FLAC (or whatever other format) while I'd wait for the CD to arrive (it came in a paper box case). Love this cross-buy system!

Cross buy how it should be

Let me purchase content and give me the choice of how I use it. Don't give a choice and I will buy Physical and make my own Digital copy. I wonder if the publishers will ever realize that their Ideals of controlling access to the content and having us purchase Multiple times hasn't really worked since the advent of Items like Cassette Tapes (making mix tapes and "personal use" copies). As for how it's working out for them in the digital space they keep trying to lock it down and then act all surprised when the community cuts them out of the picture all together and Piracy rates increase (perhaps correlation does equal causation in this case).

There will come a time in the future when Physical media simply reaches it's limit (Physics and all) and Digital will be the only viable option but it will be a while before that (I hope) and until then I think DVD will continue to stick around until the very end. To many people the advantages newer media delivery systems just are not a good enough value proposition to move on at the moment.

I suppose broadband is much cheaper in the European Union is it because they have a larger population than the U.S.

It would be nice if they just cut the cord already. I have no use for all these DVDs accumulating in my ever increasing wall of blurays

Digital media is limited by physics too. I guess we can't say which will be first, but how can you be sure download speed and hard disk space won't be a serious impediment before disk size? But if it does last that long into the future, I have my doubts DVD will be around more than 10 years from now.

Here is what they should do:

When UHD is released this winter they should stop release new movies on DVD and stop re-issue movies that are available on Blu-Ray on DVDs. This will force users to either convert to blu-ray, UHD or streaming sites. (Because people still want to watch movies.) DVDs will only be used for titles that does not have been mastered in HD yet.

As the world goes digital, they should also start selling their movies as DRM-free copies. Pay, download and then you are free to burn it on DVDs, Blu-rays or store digitally without any restrictions. This way, we'll actually own the movies we buy digital. (Like gog.com but for movies.)

DVDs gets phased out, Blu-ray for the masses and UHD for the premium users.

I like this idea, but I think we should go even further, by eliminating television entirely, and making personal ownership of any movie, show or disc illegal.

That will again give movie theaters a monopoly, and allow them to charge as much as they want, 50 Euros, 100 Euros, or more per showing of any movie. We can also strip search people before they enter those theaters, to make sure that they don't enter the theater with any recording device, and make lifetime imprisonment the punishment for even trying to record a movie. I would suggest death, but for some reason some people can be sensitive about executing people. lol

As you say, the important thing is to give no vote to the majority of consumers and adopt a planned socialist system. Perhaps you could even call up Russia and ask if they'd like to reform the U.S.S.R. Tell them that Sweden is now ready to join, and maybe they'll do it?

UHD is creeping up on us fast. Not that I think it is going to be a huge hit but hopefully I'm wrong.

Quick subject change.
Someone told me I'm a "blu-ray ninja". When did my moniker change, and how? Is there a list of all the nicknames members get, and how we earn them?

It changes based on post count and it changed at the 5000 post count.

That's cool.
I'm on Tapatalk, so I rarely see it. I went on a desktop to see it.
Is there a list of all the names we earn and at what number of posts it changes? I tried searching, but, couldn't find it

There is an old thread around here somewhere that talked about it. Then again the post count levels have probably changed again over time. I do know it changed to Blu-ray Knight at 7500 and Blu-ray Champion at 10000.

I believe DVD is the future. The world will soon come to an end and all hdtvs will be destroyed. Only CRTs will survive. And due to that DVD will become most popular media format because Internet will shut down. I am a DVD ninja with a large collection of dvds and zero blu rays and i will watch all my DVDs on my CRT tv even after the apocalypse hits.
This is DVD ninja carrying this message from the future. You can still plan ahead for the apocalypse and buy yourself CRT tvs and grow your dvd collection because once all is said and done, DVDs are all that will survive.
