I'm coming around to streaming. I saved heaps of money by streaming Deadwood, Six Feet Under, and The Wire this month instead of outright buying the discs. The quality was good enough considering I didn't spend hundreds of dollars to see them.

Streaming music and downloading music from an online store has been here for a while now. It's easier than streaming movies yet people somehow keep buying CDs. Not the numbers they used to, but CD is still around. If streaming/downloading is what people want, wouldn't the format have died by now?

Streaming is convenient especially in situtations where you might want to check out a movie prior to buying it or where a blu-ray version doesn't exist but the stream is of better quality than an existing DVD release.
It's also nice for those shows that my younger kids might want to watch now but will eventually grow out of. This way I don't have to purchase all of those releases and then be stuck with the physical media in a few years. |

many of us do that, but why do you buy a CD and not use itunes (or similar DL service) or Spotify (or similar streaming service) that is the question. A CD is just digital music on a disk so when you play it back if it is off the disk or not is imaterial. Obviously you see an advantage to purchasing the CD over the none-physical plain digital options, and that was the point of the OP.
If Richie buys CDs because he likes shinny things then that would most likely apply for films as well, if Frank buys CDs because they make great backups and give more options (i.e. he is paranoid his HDD dies or his ipod gets lost and then he will need to take the time to transfer all his songs back onto the device) then he might see it the same way with films, if maestro buys CDs because of the better quality audio than he might also like the better A/V quality of BD over streaming, if Moses buys a CD because he does not have an internet connection (or his internet is slow) then his connection will equally be an issue for films....... In essence no matter what reason someone has that makes them buy CDs the same reason will equally (but possibly with it being a bigger issue) with films, while the opposite is not necessarily true (i.e. if Trixie buys singles on itunes (and for the fun of it let's say albums on CDs) then that can't apply for films since people don't just want to watch a single chapter of film) |

If all of the music I listened to was available legally in digital form, I'd never buy an audio disc again. |

For my movie rentals, I got my iTunes and I have a deal for a few extra bucks. People want to watch movies, watching movies is and has always been price driven. The future of watching rentals will be downloading and streaming, movie collecting will still be around but the market will shrink. Last edited by pagemaster; 12-31-2012 at 10:26 PM. |

What many don't realise is that all those streaming fanboys are encouraging watching movies on smartphones. That is where the death of movies lies. Even 10 inch tablets will be phased out with 7 inch tablets succeeding them. If TV sales continue to slump over next five years we may all be forced to watch movies on 4 inch smartphones or 6 inch phablets. Film as an art form. Not if we are heading in that direction.

iTunes, Amazon, etc. generally only offer media in specific (lossy) formats. I buy CDs and rip to FLAC so that my music doesn't take a hit in quality just for the sake of convenience. The situation is the same with movies. Netflix, iTunes and the like don't offer anything of comparable quality to Blu-ray. Maybe the "average" user can't tell the difference, but the big fans and discerning viewers can. It's these "power" users who refuse to sacrifice quality for (limited) convenience who are spending the most money, and thus must be catered to at least a portion of the time. |

I just bought the soundtrack for Sugarman, I bought it on CD, I also have a whole bunch of records as well. But that does not mean I won't buy from iTunes. |
