I use Netflix and iTunes mainly for movies that I also do not want own or have no interest in watching more than once, and new release rentals. People would be surprised at how great the quality is when streaming on the best quality setting.

Streaming has already 'taken off'.

See, now something I don't understand is why the staff seemed unwilling to just merge that previous thread with this one instead of locking or deleting the previous thread. Like others said, everyone was being pretty civil.

Sounds like the off-topic factor was just getting out of hand. Why merge that into this thread where more people can be exposed to it and start contributing to the theoretical discussions about the nature of subjective and objective through interpretation of their definitions?

Besides, it was a redundant thread. This thread was created first and is the same general topic where the discussions were mostly the same anyhow.

I would have to say so, I am at a 8-1 streaming vs blu ray ratio. I just recently bought Unfirgivrn but before that I did a number of iTunes and Netflix movies.

So yeah, it's ready taken off....

Not in my house. I have the media but find myself returning to disc time and time again.

For renting --- yes!

But Streaming to own --- no! It does have it's followers (like pagemaster), but they are definitely in the minority.

Nice assumption but I don't purchase on line movies to own. I do rent more iTunes movies than I ever rented blu rays movies. And now that I find the picture quality an acceptable alternative to blu ray, my use of Netflix has really increased. P

I'm a bit irked some of my posts from the other thread didn't make it over here, but to summarize my thoughts there, streaming won't replace Blu-ray until a few things happen.
  1. The internet is treated like a utility, where infrastructure is advanced and maintained well, data caps don't exist, and prices are reasonable. This is not true today by any stretch of the imagination.
  2. Streaming availability outstrips availability of physical media. Since data is data, it need never go out of print.
  3. Prices are fair. Currently aside Netflix and sometimes Amazon, prices for streaming are fairly silly (I've checked out places like Vudu and almost choked at the ridiculous prices).
  4. Streaming quality rivals or exceeds Blu-ray. When I can stream a lossless DTS-HD MA 7.1 audio track along with a 20-25 Mbps video track across the internet, that will be the day streaming will replace Blu-ray (though of course, by then we'll have 4K/8K media and this same conversation will start anew).

Audio is such an insignificant issue for most streaming users. The best audio for home has always had options and most people do not care. Laserdisc was alway better than VHS and DVD was always better than VHS.

Laserdisc was also technically superior to DVD as well.

IMO, 5.1 lossy is good enough and both iTunes and Netflxi can deliver it

And the end of the day. Most people care about the picture quality and Netflix and iTunes is indeed good.

Uhmmm ................I can tell from your post ---- You must not have a sound system (at least a good one) and must not have a large screen TV with 1080p.

If you did, Dolby Digital (lossy) 5.1 would not be good enough,

& I also don't think you would be touting Netflix picture quality (which is only a little better or the same as DVD -- maybe at best Upscaled DVD quality). I am not saying that it is bad, but it is definately not close to as good as blu-ray.

Oh, and on Netflix, you are lucky if you get Dolby Digital (lossy) 5.1 sound. Sometimes it says that and it is just stereo pushed out to all 5 speakers & the subwoofer. I have watched a few items on Netflix that I also own on DVD and I often get the same sound from all speakers as opposed to unique sound from each of my 5 individual speakers.

I have an outstanding sound system and my TV is 1080p

5.1 lossy is the same sound used in movie theatres since the early 90s. It has alway worked well in theatres and is fine for small home theatres.

You comment a lot and always have a lot to say , so instead maybe it's about time that you answered some question. You have made some pretty bold statements along the way such as "blu-ray is not really needed unless you own a screen upwards of 60 inches" etc (you can't deny this we have all seen them), and you seem to believe that you fit into the category of being called an average consumer, and that "average consumers" like you don't care, and also appear to love telling us all that we are in the minority. Often your comments are based on your system and your belief that it's "outstanding", so since you brought it up what I'd like to know is what components you own and are running, can you please list them all, brand, model, size etc? Also, can you please list your viewing distance, the size of your room you watch movies in, and how your system is calibrated, tv settings etc? If you are going to make such comments, then it's only fair that we all know what you are basing them on and how you come to these conclusions.

+1
I mean I have a 42 inch 1080P LG LED TV (120 Hz) and the following sound system:

http://www.klipsch.com/rb-51-ii-home-theater-system

with a viewing distance of about 5-6 feet and I can notice a difference in both picture quality and audio quality (especially audio) between blu-ray and netflix.

Dude, you kept a deleted post from a deleted thread on your phone and then dragged it into another thread days later.

And this is your first point? That discussions are meant to go forwards and not backwards?

Seriously?
