[Sigh] [shakes head at digital everything]

There will always be a very small very loud bunch of people who think the newest thing will be the best thing.

I love how people talk about "the mighty cloud" like it isn't a server farm in the middle of BumF#^K USA. The cloud can go down. You can lose everything. And who is to say it will all be there 50 years from now?

I still have VHS tapes and a VCR. I never had to complain that the old WWF logo was blurred out of every event, because I still have all of their old releases.

And who is to say your collection wont be wiped out from some natural disaster? Nothing is permanent, it's just media for crying out loud.

It's now illegal to jailbreak your smartphones, it's illegal to paint your house a certain color if it does not meet community guidelines, and soon enough it will be illegal to make back up copies of your physical Blu-rays. It's incredible how many people are pridefully ignorant, it's incredible how many back up laws that do not have your best interest at heart.
I bought my cell phone CASH!

I can also sell my blu-ray movies to ANYONE I deem.

Yes and no, I have the choice, I do both.
+1 to pagemaster's post and BB, it isn't that inconvenient. Other than the back and forth with the Apple tech, I think it didn't take that long at all. Like pm said, I have a choice and do both. Something that always cracks me up about threads like this, is there is no balance and neither side is completely right.

Obviously.

Congratulations on the world's thinnest argument though.

Natural disaster.

Totally love your kind though. Thank you for that.

Actually, I know a guy who has about 2000 laserdiscs. He refuses to keep them all together in one apartment, he is afraid of damage to his collection.

He keeps some at storage, some at his parents and some at his apartment.

As if natural disaster is any less threat than some data center losing power? I just made a ridiculous (though not irrational) claim to counter yours.

There is a balance, like you said...I do both as well. It's just the people that want to hold onto physical media, with such a tight grasp that they throw out claims like "I will NEVER stream a movie, because they will NEVER look as good as a blu-ray!" urge me to defend the other extreme. It reminds me of people who deny science and evolution, in favor of the bible. Why can't you accept both? Why couldn't God have created a single celled organism that evolved into the modern man?

Well, I feel bad for those who pay more than $10 for Blu ray.

Why? Bluray has never been better value. See, it is comments like yours that baffles me page master! It sounds like you have already decided not to invest in bluray in my opinion. Am I right to presume you are more of a casual film fan rather than a true enthusiast?

Blu ray is much better value than a "cloud" purchase. But, the release date prices are too high in my great opinion. Closer to $10...and I buy them.

How come? I have a $15 price limit on most as well, usually shoot for $10, though. Truth of the matter is, physical media just doesn't carry much value anymore. I've had the same 30 blu-rays I've had on craigslist for nearly a year now, and they just wont sell! They're all priced at $5.

Almost every movie eventually hits $15 or less anyway, especially during Black Friday.

TV manufacturers are suffering due to lack of demand apparently and many have exited the tv business. This cannot continue or there will be no tv makers left in my opinion. No profit means no point surely?

As for kids I wager that they won't even think about watching at the same time as parents.
The issue is that you are mixing up exceptions and absolutes. Yes I am guessing in most relationships/families there will be some stuff that don’t overlap and so “I want X and you want Y” but there will also be stuff that do “we both want to see X”. People don’t live for the exceptions. The reality is that multi-TV households have existed for at least as long as I can remember. Part of it is location (i.e. for example a TV in the kitchen so that we can watch the news while eating) but part of it is for choice as well The question do people live their life with “I don’t want to be able to watch something with my loved one(s) eve if we are interested in the same show/movie” because there might be exceptions or not. Personally I believe even if the exceptions are 90% of the time they will always be seen as exceptions since especially with today’s ultra busy life styles every minute that can be stolen together is precious.

As for kids, yes and no. Young kids stick to parents like glue and you can enjoy a film/show with them, for teens and pre-teens I will mostly agree that they tend to not want to be with parents, but then teens would still use a TV with their friends.

No TV makers left?? Really?? Lol, you are a funny guy.. Yes HDTV's no longer sell that is why Walmart, Best Buy, Target, etc all featured them as some of the biggest Black Friday deals.

Which manufacturers have pulled the plug?

Japanese companies are suffering huge losses due to a number of factors, mainly the strong Yen and the big quake. Hard to blame that on HDTV.

Samsung, LG, and Vizio don't see to be hurting..

uhhhhhh, TV mfgs are suffering (at least the japanese ones) due to that huge quake , poor business decisions and the saturation of the market... you have to hit a peak in growth sooner or later, they finall are coming to that point. now it's just people upgrading or buying a new one when theirs die. LG, Visio, Samsung and even places like Westinghouse (*yuck) are making great profits.

that is idiotic. Music and films are not the same thing. iTunes was allowed to be DRM free because CD is DRM free and Apple argued that point. DVD and BD are not DRM free so there can never be an argument by anyone in the digital movie distribution business to be allowed to distribute DRM free content.

As long as iTunes drove iPod sales and the iPods drove iTunes sales Apple did not care and so did not want to ge rid of DRM but with more people saying "why do I need an iPod, I have my smart phone that plays music" and with iOS losing ground in the smartphone (and tablet) market they wanted to make it simpler for people to continue buying content there.

Physical media has been devalued for years. It happened when DVD hit the dump bins and used movies were sold for über cheap just after release.

Digital media, IMHO, is in much more trouble. With cheap streaming and piracy studios are not going to be able to sell movies digitally for what they did with physical media. It is also much cheaper and convenient to rent a digital movie than buy one. Digital is really shaping up to be mostly a rental format and I suspect physical media will cater to hardcore collectors for years and years to come.
