I don't have a 3DHDTV yet, but I bet this movie looks great in 3D.

I'll be watching it again Saturday.

I agree that he probably thought he imagined it.
[Show spoiler] The thing you see in his eye is very "blink and you miss it" so I'm sure he felt startled by it but quickly shrugged it off....until he started getting sicker and sicker.

Religion in sci-fi is very common. And yes time to rethink.

There was a time, when Director's Cuts were few and far between and were created when the studio had tampered with, or influenced to detrimental effect, the final product.

In my opinion, the only two Ridley Scott films that ever matched this criteria were Blade Runner and Kingdom of Heaven.
Agreed. Although I find the extended cut of Gladiator to be superior to the theatrical version mainly because it fleshes out Commodus far more.

True, but in Prometheus it's handled in an extremely clumsy, hamfisted way. It's just silly, empty, and dumb.
Quotes like, "It's what I choose to believe," are just ridiculous when said by anyone, let alone a scientist. There is faith, and then, there is burying your head in the sand. It's just straight-up dumb. The film tells us these people are scientists, but they never, for one instance, actually act or talk like scientists. They talk like highschool stoner philosophers, and act like kids who are about to be killed at Camp Crystal Lake.
All the beautiful visuals in the world - and don't get me wrong, Prometheus certainly is beautiful - cannot cover up the horrible writing problems that the film has.
How about the awful cross symbolism in the film?
[Show spoiler]When David takes Shaw's cross off, saying that it might be contaminated, and Ridley gives us a big closeup of it. It's just cheap and lame. The only reason for the closeup and David's statement is so that we get the closeup of her putting the cross back on at the end of the film. He's concerned about contamination, is he? When she's been impregnated with an alien, and he's got a huge jar of black goo in his fridge. Sure.

Is it just me, or does the backdrop in the scene at the beginning with Weyland look like the Los Angeles skyline from Blade Runner? They are even building Pyramid like structures, much like the Tyrell Corp. building.

I think David is more curious about her belief and the importance of the cross to her as an item. The contamination comment is just an excuse to take it.

Now I'm not saying the Final Cut is superior to the 4 other cuts, it's just Ridley's original vision and his "Director's Cut".
I like the final cut better than any other cut of the film.

After watching the Special Features disc I must say it is well worth the extra money for this disc.

It's an excuse for the writers and Ridley to give us a cheesy moment of her putting the cross back on. If he's curious about it, why would he take it? What exactly would her cross do to assuage his curiosity?

Riiiiight.

My grandfather was a geologist, and he wasn't a mindless robot in a lab coat that applied the scientific method to everything. He was a fully fleshed out human being with a unique personality, which included opinions of his own and the fact that he was a Christian.

Methinks you apply unfounded assumptions to what a scientist is.

[Show spoiler]The scientists talk about belief more than science. One of them literally gets stoned while he's trapped in the ship, like a kid in a slasher film, and yes, he's killed. Saying, "It's what I choose to believe," is empty-headed - it says nothing at all, refuses to ask any questions, and shows no insight into anything at all, other than a dangerous character flaw, particularly for a scientist who is supposed to look for evidence.

Questioning and applying the scientific method is what actually prevents you from being a robot. Mindlessly saying it's what you choose to believe is actually the very definition of robotic.

Huh?

Maybe you need to break out a dictionary and look up the word "robot," or better yet, get out into the world and meet some more people before you decide on how they act.

I work with (and am taught by) scientists on a regular basis, and they come in all flavors, all religions, and many different walks of life. Some are of the generic movie-style scientists you wanted these characters to be and others have such strong personalities and value systems of their own that you would not know they were scientists unless they told you.

What makes you think any human being should completely conform to their vocation?
