But as the script morphed into a sci-fi story about human origins, it delivered something people didn't expect. The second problem is the film cannot decide if it is a horror tale or a thought-provoker. While it is possible to have both, this movie struggles with integrating the two at times. Some moments are horror and others are more cerebral. Finally, it insults the intelligence of the viewer with dumb moments like the lost geologist with the mapping drones, the biologist terrified of biology, perfectly matching DNA with a speies that is not a perfect physical match to the human race, a crew that's cool with dying, an unnecessary zombie attack, and two dumb women that can't swerve to the left or right.

Personally, I love the film despite it's flaws. I was hoping to get something more out of Ridley's return than the haunted house treatment and I got it, but I totally understand why people dislike this movie in the same way how I understand how some think Blade Runner is boring.
I was with you until that last part : Blade Runner - boring!?

Everyone does have their own opinion though. Oh well.
I really liked this movie and to me it was one of the best releases of 2012.

So from the thought provoking camp can someone shed some light on the thoughts it provoked?

I thought one reviewer who described the backdrop of the movie as ”chthonic mumbo-jumbo, pseudo-religious, pseudo-biological, and pseudo-mythological bombast” basically hits the nail on the head in that it is all dross set dressing with nothing insightful or intelligent to say.

Seems to me that any movie that raises the age old questions: Who are we? Why are we here? is thought provoking.

Even more thought provoking is: Where will the sequel take us?

I couldn't agree more. I can obviously see the flaws of Prometheus, but, there's still something alluring with this film.
My hope is, if we do get any sequel to Prometheus, it will only enhance the overall experience of the film. I know that this sounds like a back-handed form of praise(ie; "the only way to enjoy Prometheus is by watching the 2, or 3 films together")...but, I sincerely believe this.

Here's hoping any sequel does happen, and adds to the overall narrative and experience!!

Well, you would hope that that is EVERY writers/producers/directors/moviehouses intention. Though it never pans out that way.

In the case of Prometheus, it wasn't a commercial flop but it wasn't an absolute hit. I think the home media sales are quite high which indicates a "cult" following. I think Scott and the writing team tried too much with Prometheus (especially since it was only intended as a 1 film only movie), so perhaps they can learn from the experience and expand on their rather ambitious "Engineers" universe, their intentions and the "meaning of life" (and perhaps answer some of the questionable, unanswered questions about the film).

I think it's a great setting to expand into a trilogy and that there'll be more consistency and cohesion within the stories and concepts.

Like you said, one can only hope

Well Elizabeth Shaw and David are on their way to seek out the Engineers, in a Space Ship from this Military Planet. You know the Space Ship has to be infected with Aliens, and they are going back to the Home Planet. Hopefully we learn something about the Engineers, and why they wanted to destroy Earth. David said, "In order to create, one must first destroy." So we have to know why the Engineers want to create a new Earth. Maybe it will try and answer the question, is there a Supreme Being or God?

Watched this again the other night, it really is terrible. And yet I keep coming back to it! I dunno, maybe it's because it's such a rarity to see an adult sci-fi blockbuster these days. It looks sooooooo pretty, too.

Is it wrong that I actually thought some of the deleted scenes were part of the movie? I was expecting to see Shaw's fight with the Engineer and when it cut straight to him grabbing her in the hallway it was jarring beyond belief. I also missed Janek's monologue about the weapons facility. And other scenes also flow better, like Vickers' conversation with her father.

I dislike the trend for extended versions because they usually bloat the movie and belabour the point, but Prometheus is just too damned choppy in its theatrical form and needs a bit more room to breathe. Hopefully a longer version will follow at some point - it is a Ridley Scott joint after all...

I actually agree with you on this one. The 'deleted' scenes in this should've been left in as they actually would've made the film bearable considering he cutdown the most important scene which ruined the whole film.

May I ask to what scene you're referring?

I also belong to the "it's remarkably bad considering its pedigree and beauty" camp, and I'm wondering if restoring one scene might change my mind.

I've only seen the shite once so I don't know how to explain it and I can't even remember the actors in the scene lol

It was the scene at the end where the 'alien' kills the leader in the map room? There's about 3 or 4 lines of dialogue cut that basically explains what the hell is going on.

Perhaps humans were originally going to be a stepping stone to a different species, but we grew out of control too quickly.
