Are you guys satisfied that Ridley finally gave more backstory on The Space Jockey or do you wish he had left the mystique intact?

Yes and no. I really enjoy the ideas this movie presents to the Alien universe but a bit let down with how sloppily written a handful of the characters are in their actions on screen.

The characters Fifield and Milburn bug me the most. Because their actions and the way they behaved made no sense given their "field of study".

I disagree. Scientists don't have to act like overly cautious nerds, they just have to be experts in their field. I found it totally believable.

Something strange just occurred to me.... Please consider the following points:
  • Scientists discover an archaeological find of great significance linking the ascent of man to a race of aliens who visited earth
  • These discoveries are mirrored around the world
  • Mr. Weyland bankrolls an expidition to discover the truth of these discoveries and the implications therein
  • Weyland himself tags along and ultimately dies on the trip
  • Scientists discover an alien building on their expidition, go inside and discover the makers have housed a different species of deadly alien in there that attacks the humans
  • Several humans get lost and ultimately succumb to a bitter end inside this Alien building at the hands of this new species
  • Humans discover wall markings/holograms that conveniently explain why the building is there, who made it and what the aline backstory is
  • Almost all characters are poorly fleshed out, the audience given little reason to care about them and they die one-by-one in either stupid, illogical or obvious ways
  • One female protagonist survives in the end after a fight with both the Alien and the other species this alien has kept in the building
  • One of the final scenes is an Alien spacecraft taking off and flying away into outer space
  • Final scene is a "new" type of specie bursting from the chest of the original alien creature
  • We are left with an ending to the film just begging for a sequel

So, is it me or did I just watch Ridley Scott's version of AVP?

I know scientists who like to play beer pong and take big rips out of bongs. You can't stereotype people just by their profession, so I am going to agree with your post as well.

Hey, I studied beer pong in college, and I'm no scientist!

No, I'm pretty sure you watched Ridley Scott's version of At the Mountains of Madness.

It's a film which seems to polarize opinions. What I don't understand is why those who didn't like it, feel the need to go ond on about why they didn't like it.

+ a million.

I have indeed been amused by the multitudinous comment threads where people invest this picture with a surgical level of scrutiny.

I won't argue but I disagree given the circumstances.
[Show spoiler]I can't think of one scientist that if on an alien world would approach an alien creature and try to pet it and call it names like "hey beautiful"...I don't care how much beer pong they played or how many bong hits they took in college, they didnt drink beer and smoke a J before going on the mission did they? (actually...what was Fifield smoking in his helmet?...well HE may be have been stoned, would explain why he went from nuts to chill)...you would think they did but they didn't. Its not about being "overly cautious" as much as it is at least showing SOME form of caution when approaching something above and beyond your understanding and Milburn did not...at all.

Now I've no doubts that scientists can be "laid back dudes/dudettes" but when its time to work, you express caution and respect for your craft...period. How can THAT be argued? Especially given the expensive high profile nature of this mission.

So if you find that totally believable then I find it totally believable they hired the cheapest, dumbest crew they could find.

Yes, that one scene where they first meet the little alien that looked like a dick did seem a little off. It didn't look like a friendly little furby, it seems a little odd that they were so nonchalant about meeting this new creature.

Besides that I loved the movie. Prometheus was great and original and I liked the subtle linkage to Alien.

This is my favorite sci-fi film since Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence in 2001. I want to see it a second time this weekend. Day 1 Blu-ray purchase for sure!

I saw it twice in theaters in 3D, so far. The 3D was phenomenal and really added something to the movie.

I pre-ordered the Blu-ray 3D version. Cannot wait to see it again.

I like to believe that Fifield was indeed smoking ganja in his helmet because he didn't flip out about seeing the snake/penis monster. Needless to say his high got blown.

I had the impression there was only one species of alien the Engineers. The proto facehuggers came from the worms that came in contact with the black goo. And where did the worms come from? Maybe they were created specifically to mix with the black stuff to form the weapon. By separating the two they aren't as dangerous. Just a theory.
