I would recommend watching them all in order of theatrical release. While Prometheus isn't a prequel, it does explain some things and it's better to speculate about that stuff when you watch the original.

There merit in the argument about watching Prometheus first, so as to not come into the film with any preconceived notions. However, I strongly recommend you do NOT do this. Alien is one of the great science fiction horror masterpieces, and it is better served by not knowing anything about the world Ridley Scott has created beforehand. Watching Prometheus first will, in my opinion, spoil the joy of experiencing Alien for the first time.

Then, once you get to Prometheus - expect something set in the same cinematic world, but very different.

Watch them in order -

1] Prometheus
2] Alien
3] Aliens

etc etc

I just sent amazon an email asking if they would ship this in a package other than the bubble envelopes.

I received both Avengers and Cinderella with damaged slip covers. I don't understand why they don't ship them in one of those amazon Blu-ray cardboard cases.

My first choice is to go to Best Buy and get it since its 24.99 but since I don't have a car at the moment, I'm going to stick with amazon. However, If I get a reply saying that they can't do that, I will cancel and find a way to get it. I was really distraught when both of my blu rays came with damaged slip covers.

In case anyone was wondering, this is the packaging I was talking about:

Sweet, and thanks for all the feedback. I'll go ahead and go for the Alien Anthology first, followed by Prometheus.

And to answer somebody else's question, yes I haven't seen any of the Alien films, but I do have the Anthology on Blu!

I know, I know, it's pretty shameful , but at least I have it so once I get Prometheus i'll have a little marathon

Thanks,

Well, it's going to be $20 for the regular 2D version at Best Buy and $25 for the 3D Collector's Edition. $5 off if you trade in a DVD.

Thanks,
In my opinion, watch Alien: Theatrical Cut, Aliens: Special Edition, Alien3: Workprint Version, and then Prometheus. Skip any version of Alien: Resurrection.

I just received my 2 neca promtheus figures. Pressure suit one is missing a hand! its floating around in the packaging. Hope this ebay seller want to keep his 100% rating and exchange it for me as he has a bunch more for sale. They are really neat tho, they are getting a spot in my display cases for sure. Good thing is he is a local seller and I'm trying to do a hand to hand exchange. Wish me luck

Can someone please refresh me with the theatrical cut of Alien? Isn't there some continuity issue that doesn't work with the Director's cut or something? Which is why the theatrical is preferred... (scratches head)

I don't know about continuity issues, but the reason the theatrical is preferred (by most, at least) is because it is the director's cut. Ridley achieved exactly what he wanted in that original cut. In 2003, Fox decided they wanted Ridley to do a so-called "Director's Cut", and he obliged by adding in some cut scenes and then trimming the overall cut down to fine tune the pacing. But he has maintained that the original is his preferred cut.

No, you're right. The continuity issue with the Director's Cut involves the alien's lifecycle and how it relates to the first sequel.

The funny thing is, Alien is probably the only movie Ridley actually got to release his preferred cut theatrically and was basically forced to do a "directors cut". It's usually the other way around for him.

Cool. I missed the $14.99 Best Buy preorder and was gonna skip on this one after seeing the current $29.99/$24.99 prices for 3D/2D. I'll definitely cough up the $19.99 for 2D next week, and the U&S option makes it even sweeter.
